My Journey to Airgun Nation Forum

Welcome!! I got back into airguns a few years ago with my old Crosmans, had them rebuilt. Twenty something guns later I have multiples bought with a purpose in mind. If you have a general shooting distance in mind work around that. I have two Gauntlets in .25 that would do well out to 70 yards or so that I’ve tested at that range. Got a couple break barrels that would work. I have a restored Crosman 150 in .22 that gives about 50 rounds on a pair of CO2 cartridges. All of these would work and require minimal support gear so less crap to haul around. There’s no end to the possibilities but bankruptcy could be a problem. You’ll be able to deal with the problem at hand and have a lot of fun doing it.

Western Airguns  Western Mordax Venom, first impressions, and eventual ongoing review.

Really good news and really bad news!

The good - Man I love shooting this Venom! I got a quick zero at 30Y using the Holosun with the 8 moa green dot sight and one group was an inch or so which is hard to do without a fine dot or reticle. Then I set up 15 of my mid size to larger steel knockover plates on the ground which were of various sizes from 1.5" to 4" going out from 10Y to 30Y, smaller ones were closer, larger as distance increased, and shot them offhand fast but trying for precision vs all out speed. This was just what I wanted the Venom for and it was a success. Also there were no malfunctions until....

The bad - I'll just spit it out and honestly I don't know how I managed to do what I did since I knew better but I overfilled the gun because I was looking at the regulator gauge "not moving" instead of the bottle gauge which messed something up causing the guns magazine to quit advancing properly. So I sadly just put the gun back in the case. It's only supposed to be filled it to 300 bar max and I filled to to 311 bar.
I think I'll stop around 290 bar after I get it back repaired. Lesson learned the hard way, darn it!

My plan was to put my March 1-10 on the Venom to see how precise it is and will do this later.
Was also going to take the folder off and shoot it as a pistol.

Sorry for the bad news so I'll revisit this thread in a couple more weeks with hopefully more good news.

Thankfully I had brought four other airguns to shoot so I enjoyed them. Also had such a great time with my family camping 12 yards off the Greys river, with near perfect temperatures, and got to know my 2 year old grandson a lot better.

My son bought a drone so maybe I can get him to take some footage of me doing some shooting with the Venom which would be fun to watch.

The thing I found the most interesting is the place we go to to camp is one of the prettiest I've seen and for most of the 5 days we were there we had it all to ourselves?!
Thanks Lord for your grace, mercy, kindness and such a fun time, in spite of my mistakes.

This is what it looks like there.

Benchrest rifle

When you say "bench rest rifle" around here, people will rightly presume that you are referring to competition level PCPs which will cost many thousands of dollars to setup.

As a non-competitive airgunner my definition of a "bench rest" rifle may be a bit skewed. 🙃

In simplest view, I bench shoot all of my rifles - at least for tuning and sighting it anyway. Plinking, pesting and hunting rifles aside, leaves the heavier PCPs with the more powerful scopes that I shoot from my bench. Specifically for bench shooting are my Impact, (6-24x50) Panthera (5-25x56), HM1000x (6-24x50) and
Leopard (6-24x50).

I prefer .22 and accept the limits and challenges of that caliber. I shoot my 30ish fpe PCPs out to 50-60 yards and my 45-55 fpe rifles out to 128 yards (my longest shooting lane). This works for me.

It would help if you mentioned if you were into casual shooting or serious competition.

Cheers!

Benchrest rifle

Bench rest competition is something I’ve wondered about but have no knowledge, don’t know where to start. Any in the southeast? What are the requirements in terms of caliber, sights, distances? I’d like to take something I already have to start but don’t want to look like a complete idiot first time out. I’m about to start the 10 meter matches at CMP next month and looking forward to it but benchrest sounds interesting. Putting in the work is no problem but I want to avoid throwing money at it until I get it right.

Air Venturi  Avenge x .25

What you are holding is the poppet and poppet spring. Attached is the best diagram I have concerning the Avenge-X receiver and O-rings necessary for a rebuild. Look to parts #32 & # 33. You should see how things attach to each other and be able to figure out reassembly. There is a YouTube video but it is not in English:
. Maybe you can turn on subtitles - I just watched with the sound off. I also have another file containing more schematics on my laptop that can be sent later if you need.

The plastic piece im holding in original photo doesn't have a hole for that pin to go in.

Stressing on Rifle Cases, here's a soft case that actually fits

This one was is killer for my bullpups.
Still use for my impact. Hauling a giant pelican everywhere is no fun.
Thick padding. Double rifle.compartment. not floppy or flimsy, backpack, briefcase сarry or slung. Never had issues. Pockets sre strong secure and padded as well
I've got 2 dulces and a savior. The pockets on both are awesome. I keep everything for a range day and data collection in each bag for the fx guns with too much ammo, and 2 discos with a range finder, ammo, and buddy bottle in the other.

Basically grab and go range day bags dedicated to each gun style. The backpack straps make moving these fully loaded bags a heck or a lot easier, especially the 48 inch cases.

Just got my Airmarksman Ace slugs

I just did a little shooting this evening before the mosquitoes came out in full force.

I was only able to shoot at 30 yards. Hopefully this weekend I will be able to shoot at 100 yards.

I also shot 5 other slugs that I have been shooting from my DRS to see how they compare to the Ace.

I adjusted my DRS 22 700 to shoot the Ace 40.1gr slugs 957 fps.

I did not change any settings on the rifle after I had it set up for the Ace slugs.

FX  What causes regulator to be same pressure as the rest of the air tube?

As a physicist I find your O ring timeline quite satisfying, I was confused about the behavior but that seems an entirely plausible series of events, thanks for that. I can stop scratching my head now.

The 'washers' I was in fact referring to are the Belleville washers, conical washers made of spring steel. It is a neat way to make a tunable high pressure spring I may incorporate into my sciencing in the future. And in the video they describe the first two washers, those next to the piston head, as the 'black washers' and indicated that they are a different color which I did not notice when I looked at them.

As for the grease, thanks for the advice. I find earned experience such as this quite valuable. I may try it when the rings come in although the only oil I have currently is bar oil and two stroke mixing oil. The two stroke oil is right out but the bar oil has a number of the mechanical features you would want for reg use but I have no idea how it will interact with the O rings so I probably would not rely on that unless I plan on tearing the valve apart again this winter. It might be an interesting exercise though? You say mobile one? Seem like there must be some of that in my garage somewhere for the four stroke four wheeler, the garden tractor or the small lawn mower in there. I mean I must have a botte somewhere in there. I can't get around like I used to because of the chair but I will ask my wife to have a look.

Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

parts diagram for hw44 please

I wanted to follow up on my search for the transfer port seal. The transfer port seal size for the HW44 is 10mm OD by 1mm cross section, 70 duro. I did verify this with the very helpful folks from Airguns of Arizona. This is seal number 7 in the Weihrauch parts diagram, part number 6.2955D.

The first seal I installed blew out after about 40 shots. The second seal, I pushed downward on the air cylinder, towards the breech/barrel, while tightening the bolt. It helps to capture the seal between the units. I've shot half a tin and still holding.

What springer did you shoot today?

Got this HW77 out to check zero now that the front sight assembly is fixed. All good. POI was wandering last time I shot it before things came loose so assume that was probably when it first started to loosen up. I know I’ve whined before about the current HW stocks, but man! If they still made them like this instead of the fuglysticks they turn out now I’d probably own a half dozen more than I do.

Need Ideas - Portable Paper Target Stands

Here’s idea 1. I’ll have to compute the actual cost but it’s not super cheap but is completely flat and will store away nicely.

Check out your local Habitat For Humanity ReStore. They usually have used or low cost PVC plumbing supplies.
