Daystate  daystate alpha wolf barrel choice (.25)

thanks a lot @Arzrover , that's a lot of very useful information 👍👍👍 So the funny thing is that I had a 6b barrel in .25 that I sent back today just before I read your explanation. I didn't know what the inscription on the barrel meant, but it makes more sense now. The bad accuracy in my case was probably not caused by the barrel, but by the loose shroud. See video for illustration: wobbly shroud . So too bad I had to return the best barrel because of a poorly designed shroud.

For full information: I reached out to Daystate, as I suspect the issue is caused by the old chrony part in delrin. I asked if they could provide the newer aluminium one. All they could answer after 10 days of waiting was "Please get in touch with your dealer for further assistance". So I'm deeply disappointed in the Daystate customer support (not the first time). All the dealer could do was let me return the barrel. I'm starting to understand as well why almost no dealer in Europe wants to sell Daystate anymore.
I'm still positive on the Alpha Wolf in .30 cal, it shoots great. But Daystate as a company does not seem to inspire much confidence.

But I also understand between the lines that the Daystate barrels are happier with pellets. So I think I'll stay with pellets, and use another gun for slug shooting.
The most odd thing here is that you received a plastic chrono frame. I was not aware that any had been made since early 2020. THAT should have been the concern from Daystate.
I'm also not well informed about dealers or customer service anywhere but the USA, so what you say there is just something I don't know. I CAN say that in my interactions with the personnel at the factory and assembly location that they are good people and well meaning and generally concerned about customers and their reputation.
I'm also not sure that shroud movement will affect the accuracy. I have made some shrouds for mine and at least a couple have that movement and shoot just as well as the ones that have less. The plastic chrono frame will DEFINITELY affect accuracy though. It's a shame about having a 6b in hand and returning it...

More info... the number refers to the profile of the rifling with nothing I can define for you but the letter is the choke profile... A being zero and E being super choked. The 5 profile was ok but the heavy choke was the problem on the 5d. You won't see any of the other profiles, as far as I know .

My adventure using a RAW HM1000X for NRL22

I went out to set my DSF today out to 200 yards and I got some interesting results. I didn't clean the barrel since the last match because I wanted the rifle to be in "match condition". When I zeroed, the first couple of groups were unimpressive and the speed was around 947 fps according to the Athlon Rangemaster. I bumped the hammer spring up 3 clicks and the groups tightened up and velocity came up to 952. The Athlon chrono tends to read about 10 fps slow for me, so I decided this was good enough. Here's a photo of the group:

This group doesn't have anything to do with this post, but it was too nice not to share.

I moved to the 100 yard range. According to the Kestrel, I should be 2.3 mils at 100 yards. Note that I created a new profile with the same velocity and BC that I had before, but with no DSF data. This gives me 3 data points - straight dope based on velocity and BC, dope from the last match where I added 2 DSF values at 141 and 190 yards and dope with the new DSF values I'm about to calculate.
Back to the story. Kestrel said 2.3 mils at 100 yards but it was actually 2.1 mils. This was interesting. Usually with a rimfire rifle I would adjust the velocity to match the drop at 100 yards, and start setting DSF values at 200 yards. When I adjusted the velocity in the Kestrel to match a 2.1 mil drop at 100 yards, it gave me 1011 fps. I know it's not shooting that hot because that 50 yard group would have looked like a shotgun so I set the velocity back to 961 fps and decided to start the DSF calculations at 100 yards. So basically I told the Kestrel that I'm shooting 2.1 mils at 100, not 2.3 mils.

Then I moved to 125 yards. Kestrel said 3.34 mils. That looked right but I wanted to add a DSF calculation so I set it to 3.35 mils at 125.

At 150 yards it said 4.66 mils but it wound up at 4.8 mils.

At 175 yards it said 6.21, I rounded it to 6.2 mils.

And at 200 yards I was shooting a little low. Kestrel said 7.66 and I adjusted it to 7.75 mils.

Note that the values being given to me when I went out to the next yardage were affected by the DSF values being input. So the Kestrel saying 7.66 at 200 is based on setting all of the DSF values before 200 yards. Otherwise it would have given me 8.32 mils at 200 yards.

The interesting thing is how far the values are off from the original dope. I'll be shooting a PRS match Saturday where I'll have the opportunity to see what the drop is at 250 and 300 yards, so that will be valuable.

Here is the data, note that the re-calculated DSF is real world dope values shot today in low wind, not the values given before setting the DSF values. In other words, the third column is what I actually shot, and set the Kestrel to match.
YardageNo DSFMatch DSF (set at 141 and 190 yards)Re-calculated DSF
1002.372.32.1
1253.763.643.35
1505.2254.8
1756.746.496.2
2008.328.077.75

I played around in the Kestrel tweaking the velocity and BC in a new profile to try to get the dope to match with real world values. I can get kind of close, but it's off at either the 100 yard range or the 200 yard range. And the whole point of using DSF is to match the Kestrel values to the real world dope.

Here is my 200 yard target. There were four low shots from me adjusting the elevation turret and I had one high left shot that I can't explain, but the rest of the group was very nice.

Macavity Arms  The MA3 and MA8

The MA8 is an odd offerring. The products they have so far are cheap , in build quality, compared to many airguns out there. They expect top dollar out of a first time premium build. I would be very hesitant to drop the coin on that.
Kinda what I was thinking to a tee

Long Gong Challenge...........

Probably isn't worth the travel, time, and expense, but will they let you shoot for fun, meaning not for prizes, or standing?
The two matches I've shot haven't been part of any season series or anything, and not even really affiliated with long gong as an organization. They've just been fun matchs, the day before a PRS / NRL22X event. And I loved it! It's an easy time commitment and a lot of fun for those day before sight ins. I checked in with the MDs and neither, nor the competitors, had a problem.

So... whatever. I'm not trying to travel for long gong matches or compete in any season series. If they come up, I'll check in with the MDs and just keep having fun.

Incidentally the group detractors did seem to have some knowledge of air rifles, and basically called them out as "too consistent" LOL!

Tuning  .25 cal 26 gr slug out of m4 compact

If you have the 1:16 twist line the hybrids will work great, 1:18 and 1:24 you'll need to run them at least 960fps and hope they shoot well.
Ima try tommorow at maybe 980 tried dialing in there with my 2nd reg turned up to about 125 it’s at 120 rn.. turned to 970 had some decent shots but yeah my liner is a 1:24

Diana  Diana model 10 is a honker

the clean-up begins it will be better than new and the gun will get the care it deserves
my question is this
how many of the Giss System rebuilder take the time to do the job right, i don't believe they could charge enough
it takes hours of detailed cleaning to do the job right i guess with parts washers that could done
but a toothbrush with some sort of solvent, it takes time

Benjamin  All NEW Benjamin G3 Marauder at the PA Cup!

I apologize to you, that post does come across a bit course :(.

I do not like long guns either. One way or another, if I can get one, it will have to be shorter. Much beyond 40 inches and a rifle just becomes to long for carry. I like the G3 but not the length!
No problem at all my friend.
🫱🏻
I’d again agree that anything longer than 40in is far to long ( for me )

Monocular

Monocular do not compare to binoculars. My rifle scope is monocular. Yesterday, I used both. The binos are damn near better, plus they give a much better and larger field of view...I used the Monocular because it fits in my pocket and my fishing bag; the only reason to use it is convenience. Another thing I will mention is that 8x to me is way better than ten power. As for binos, I use 8x32 when hiking....I have to admit here, I am a "glass" addict.
Monoculer, no,10X Bino no,8X,why because of the faster focus and better stability they give me....A good pair of binoculars is a lifetime investment. Truthfully, the best now will be the best 20 years from now. I now use 8x24 Binoculars in my fishing bag.
Bird watchers are the best for learning about optics . Best for the price, they are Japanese. Then we go European. I do have some old, great Leopold Gold binoculars that are great, but they are heavy.
Halalulu, I have seen the light, the nuances of life, and the utter sharpness of color definition. Stability is a never-ending challenge for me, though.:p

N/A  Got an accurate gun? 100 yard 5x5 challenge

And another 5x5 at 100 yds with the Taipan vetran tactical 2 700mm in 25 caliber shooting JSB KO slugs 33.49 gr at 953 fps. Average of all 5 groups was 1.23 inches ctc

And with the kalibergun cricket tactical 2 60 in 22 caliber shooting H&N 217 21 gr slugs doing 927 fps. Average of all 5 groups was 1.04 inches ctc.

So today the Kalibergun beat out the Taipan

Pump vs Compressor on a Zelos?

Oof, is it that bad? Or THAT bad?

I'm used to the add ons being equal or more than the main, but was really hoping I could manage a summer of fun on a pump 🤣🤣

Between the nutria destroying garden and missing the fun plinking, my hope is for more than occasional.
I am surprised by the claims that it is "That bad". I'm (77) and can hand pump while talking on the phone. I pumped my Diana Stormrider, no problem, although it may require more time than desired.

I use a GX CS3 at the range, with a CS1-clone as backup. My problem with hand pumping is the time required, and that it would wear me out because we shoot for ~6 hours, full power .22 PCP rifles, 500-1,000 pellets per day. Divide that by (40) pellets, and the amount of pumping would take too much time from shooting, even if it didn't wear me out. If I were hunting, 40 - 80 pellets in a day, hand pumping would be workable. One issue, in my experience, is pumping above 3,000 PSI, when the pumping effort requires more upper-body weight than mine.

The best answer, in my opinion, is to find a PCP shooter locally and ask to hand pump one of their guns. My 15-year-old granddaughter weighs less than 120 pounds and could pump a gun without complaint. (All I'd need to do is to say that I'd need to get her twin brother to pmp because it's too difficult for a girl.)
