Why do they stare at you in the dark

Good day.

I was shooting targets today and all of sudden I saw movement in my scope.
A cat appeared to the shooting yard and stopped couple inches from my firing line.

He then stared at me quite a time and left off, but even with cat night vision, I wondered how it spotted me so fast.

So when I left to target and returned I saw it.. In certain angles it shows nothing and in some angles it is like a very dim flashlight.

The red dot there is my scope.
I think my illuminated reticle MIGHT have something to do with this..

My neighbors out side cat learned the sound of my gun going off and even more impressive the sound of me opening the window in the morning and would come running to get the birds I shot. he even started to camp out on my front porch. although to be fair I think his cats thought they also lived in my house lol the one was insistent on coming in every chance he got.

I had some trouble uploading the picture to the server using phone, it just kept saying something about URL missing.

I have since succeeded in uploading from phone.

But I think that the red light might do 2 things.

1. For animals that are curious (many mammals I'd guess, excepting ADHD animals like bunnys, squirrels etc. ) they can stop moving and just keep looking at you, allowing easy target.

2. The rest of the animals probably do not mind it and maybe small percentage might fear it.

I had a dirtbag walk up my driveway to steal my old mower that barely worked. He spotted the IR emitters from my security cameras and did an about face.

10 mins later he was back with his hoodie up to get my lame mower. I already had a good shot of the dumbazzes face but no one recognized the POS. I bet he hard a hard time starting tht mower to sell it too. lol. I thought about using the video for a youtube channel called "bait driveway".
