What Tool Can Grip Without Marring Finish?

I'm trying to remove an LDC from a shroud. The LDC unscrews but leaves its end cap with threads still on the shroud. I've tried gripping that end cap with a rubber pad used to remove stubborn lids from jars. No luck. This is not one of those epoxied permanent installs. I guess my finger tight twist was just a bit too much.

Any suggestions to get a better grip without marring anodized finish? I don't have a vise that I could line with rubber or leather.

Have you tried a heat gun (or hair dryer) - that might work with your rubber pad. Did the trick for me on 2 LDCs that were epoxied on.

Heat might work if you can apply it to the ring only. Get it to expand enough to release. Might change to anodizing color though. Just a thought.

Strap Wrench with a rubber strap might work for you! I agree heat will be needed to break an epoxy bond.

Thanks all - will try to find me a rubber lined strap or small pipe wrench. Need to make a point to Lube those threads a little.

if your going to use channel locks ,vice grips or pipwrench get a thick pair of work gloves cut the fingers off and apply them over the metal jaws this may help without marring or scratching the important pieces

Great ideas all thanks. For whatever reason after being stuck on for 5 days, I tried to remove by hand after shooting a 100 or so rounds and it just came right off without much effort. Really - no alcohol of any kind was involved. No clue. Just glad it came off without scratching anything up. Immediately lubed threads lightly on LDC parts and the shroud.

You might want to consider using a tiny bit of anti-sieze on the threads. That may work better than anything else to prevent this from happening again. After reading your post, I am going to do that for my moderator.
