what do you fill your BR bags with?

My BR bags just came in a lil bit ago, one day early! I wanted to fill'em with something lighter than sand for carrying in my shooting bag. when I find one I might have laying around to use, or buy a new one. Anyway, I was thinking of going over to Landmark & getting a sack of rice hulls to fill'em with. We home brewers use rice hulls occasionally to prevent a stuck mash. Can be a real goopy mess otherwise. The rice hulls, if packed in tight enough, I thought would be fine to use? It'd sure make the BR bags a lot lighter to carry around? What to y'all use? Here's a pic...

The caldwell bags come filled with corn husk granules. They can be a little hard to find. I did eventually find them at a pet store being used as kitty litter. They squeeze well with a decent weight. The down side is that, if they get wet, they expand like crazy and will bust the seams of your bag, and the kitty litter smell gets old pretty quick too. Definitely try to find them unscented! lol!

I tried some of that rubber cork stuff stuff that people sometimes use as a back stop.
A lot lighter than sand and works pretty good, I bought my bags and dead shot at the same time so the bags have not seem a lot of use.
I have a Mono pod, Harris and atlas Bipod, and big Camera Tripod, Dead shot and then the sand bags,
I shoot a lot of different places and angles,

Mine is filled with plastic granulate. The advantage is that is easy to use outdoors, it doesn't matter if the material gets wet if you let it dry properly afterwards and it's lightweight. Previously I've used (uncooked) rice, it's really stable but you have to pay attention to the weather (best if it can't get wet) and it's rather heavy.

The downside of sand can be that over the time sand will come through the bag if you don't use a plastic bag inside. But I think you can't get more stability than using proper sand..

I have used:
  • Clay cat liter (messy as it works out of the bag/fabric).
  • Sand (found it way out of the bags also and too heavy to carry around).
  • Corn cob.....(moisture trap here living on the beach).

I found pure silica crystals (used in cat litter) to have the best of all worlds.
It's a perfect weight, moisture/mold is not an issue anymore, and it won't work its way out of the zipper or seams of the bags.
It has enough "give" that you can squeeze the front or rear bag (can adjust elevation, in a very controlled manner)
I buy it at the local Walmart, very cheap less than $4 a bag. I used 2 bags of litter for a 3 BR bag set.

Never thought of that one! In other news, I finally got a call-back from Village cop shop about target shooting here. No go at all, not even arrows! Pursuant to ordinance 549.08. But, I found out from the sergeant why the range phone # doesn't work. It didn't close...it isn't done being built yet! It's going to be an indoor range around a country block from me called, " Gun Hub". He said they've gotten no word yet as to when the grand opening will be. But you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be there. And filming an episode of Airgun Shooter!

I found that the medium sandblasting granules from Tractor Supply to work great in my Caldwell Tack Driver bag. Also in my leather rear bags too. It is not sand but some other material like silica. It is coal black and very fine. It flows well through a funnel when filling. I fill the bags tight. you can squeeze the bag to get the POI where you want without much trouble

The best thing is that a 50 lb bag is not costly.....

Nice. I use Fine Blasting Media in my leather bags. Fills them tight, forms well, squeezable and heavy. I would say 5-6lbs each, maybe a lil more.
