The more I shoot, the more I appreciate what UK shooters do.

I was looking at a youtube video of this guy who was making his range cards. He had his sub 12 fpe Air Arms rifle zeroed at 25 yards. For a 50 yard shot, the pellet dropped more than 6" and a slight wind pushed the pellet 3" left of the target. By contrast, I was practicing shooting at an incline today. My gun is zeroed at 55 yards and I was shooting leaves on a tree at 85 yards and the pellet only dropped one mil dot.

I'm from the UK and I've always been envious of what you guys have at your disposal. It's not only the high power, big caliber rifles were missing out on, it's the space to shoot them. I live near the countryside but I would still be hard pushed to find a place where I could shoot freely at such distances. I watch teds videos and many others from across the pond and I'm amazed at the sheer space you guys have to practice and hunt safely at such high powers. Also, guns are not as socially acceptable over here. Even with a permission to hunt on someone's land, there's always a risk of someone calling the police as the sight of someone with a rifle stalking across a field is something we're not used to seeing. You US boys are so lucky!!!! Makes me want to come over.

If you don't have a place to shoot then why not join or form a club, get insurance, make a CASH financial offer (ie hire) to a landowner for somewhere to shoot. Almost every farm I know has at least one out of the way "dumping place" that they would love to hire out for even plinking (as long as access isn't going to be a problem) at weekends or even one specific afternoon per week. All you need in return is a simple hand written note of permission.

As long as you're not covered in tattoos, are sensibly dressed etc, there really shouldn't be a problem. if you get permission, remember that at Christmas farmers usually don't mind a nice bottle of whisky or wine.

You could also try contacting your area's police firearms officer, who may be able to put you onto a local club or possible place to shoot. You would be surprised how many police officers shoot, even airguns.

"wyshadow"Even though you guys in the UK are working with sub 12 foot pounds, I've watch some videos where you guys make some really good shots
I agree. Their 40-50 yard shots probably equal our 100+ yard shots. Even more impressive is the pin point pellet placement. I know using my 25 cal Sumatra shooting 31 gr pellets at 940 fps even at 100 yards it's still putting around 24 fpe on the target. And unless there's a strong wind, I don't have to worry too much about the pellet drifting.
