squirrels, from playing, to fighting

Morning Gents!

Today is a very special day, besides being Mothers Day, I had the experience of shooting a nutter while it was fighting with his own kind. Let me narrate. Typical Sunday morning, I get up about 6:45 and plop my rear in front of my bed room window, looking out into my yard and my adjacent neighbor's yards looking for any pest running around. Yes, I have been granted permission by my wonderful neighbors. I see one squirrel at 32 yards and pop him in the head and then 10 minutes later at the other neighbors yard, at 46 yards I pop another squirrel in the head too. Those are the 2 in the first pic off to the right. I brought them all together for one final group picture. The cool experience was the 2 on the left in the 1st pic with a close up on the 2nd pic. The 2 nutters that are close together lay dead where they were, not influenced by me in any way. Notice that the squirrel is behind the other one, because he was buying its head. These guys were 53 yards out on a tree running around chasing one another. So as soon as the one running away stopped for a moment, I took a head shot, he fell and immediately the one chasing ran up on the one I had shot and started to violently bite his head. The attacking squirrel was moving around thrashing his comrade so much I had to be safe and go for a heart and lung shot. Wack, positive hit, and even after that he would not let go of his fallen comrade. He kept on chewing on his little buddy's head, even though he was dead already from my head shot, and he insisted chewing on him for whatever reason.

This has happened in the past where I will shoot one and the other one will either run away or they attack the fallen squirrel. Supposedly something about a sick or injured member will bring predators back to the nest, so they are seen as a liability and taken out. Haha. I guess it's like when you decide to rob a bank with a group of people. Your buddy gets shot in the process by the cops, he's wounded but not dead. He's going to slow you down, while you try to get away, what do you do? Can't leave him behind alive, he may talk to the cops...BAM HEADSHOT! That brings it all into perspective. Haha

Nice story, thanks for sharing.

What gender was the biter? If he was male, they may have been fighting over territory or mating privileges.

Nice shooting too! That is a pretty good distance for head shots!

They are pests too, that's for sure. They always seem to be up to SOME kind of pesty behavior. Chewing feeders, chewing out holes in bird houses, digging holes in the yard, chasing off songbirds, EATING songbird eggs and chicks... I've heard many accounts of them liking to eat wire insulation and certain types of wood.
