Springer gas ram swap?

Have a gamo big cat in 22 that the spring broke. Tried a hardware store spring, but it wasn't strong enough. Traded for a gamo bill whisper 177 that wouldn't print a decent group with any of the pellets I have. Decided to see if I could swap out the weak spring and install the gas ram. The ram slid right in with no problem and seems to function as it should. Won't be able to shoot it for a few days.
Was wondering if anyone else had done this and what sort of results they got. The big cat was very accurate before the spring broke and I'm hoping it will remain that way with the gas ram.

Well there are a number of options for your big cat. You can get a gamo spring or a gamo piston. I did order a gag ram for my 08 whisperer a year or so ago but its still sitting on a shelf in my work shop. Google is your friend if looking for a replacement spring................I would check and see if the 177 and your 22 is the same gas ram replacement part numbers?

How many pellets had you shot through it, before it broke? Just curious.

I got the big cat in a trade. Not sure how many pellets were fired through it. If the weather allows I might be able to take it out and see what it can do. Hopefully run it across the chrono as well. I had already removed the scope when the spring broke to work on the rifle. I have a decent center point to install on it if everything works out ok.

Did a little tinkering on the insides of the rifle. Deburred everything and lubed everything with silicone grease. Did end up using the piston out of the other gamo. When I mic'd the piston seals, the one in the whisper was .020 bigger so I installed it instead of leaving the big cats original piston. Ran the big cat across the chrono using Crosman premier 14.3 HP's and it's just barely making 600 fps. Substantial less than the 950 fps the rifle is supposed to make using alloy pellets. On the up side it is still very accurate rifle. Installed a vortex red dot scope on it as it just so happened to be in the shed. Rifle is printing about 3/4" groups @ 25 yards. I think once I install the center point scope the groups ought to shrink a little. This rifle will be a close range pesting rifle.

The pistons are identical, the piston seals are the only things that were different. The piston seal from the big cat had been replaced with a new one when I replaced the spring with a hardware store spring (junk). I honestly don't feel like waiting 4 or 5 months to get a spring or a piston so I'm going to shoot this rifle for a while. Maybe run a couple hundred pellets through it and then run it over the chrono again. If it's lost a significant amount of fps then I will consider ordering another spring for it.
