Shooting at 30 06 blanks, bad idea?

i posted a video on a face book page dedicated to airgun of me shooting the primers on some 30 06 blanks and setting them off. I drilled a hole slightly smaller than the shell in a board and wedged them in the hole. Because there is no barrel to contain the shell you don't get nearly the compression out of them you would out of s gun. When they go off they sound like a fire cracker I thought it was fun my daughter was entertained by it and we were 30 yards away. When I posted the video I was pretty much bombarded with coments about how unsafe it was and how I should never do it again. I'm just curious what you guys think of this, all opinions are welcome. Thanks.

Sometimes the safety folks are killjoys. On a different forum I posted that I shoot these.. http://statelinefireworks.us/novelty-items/mad-bulls Yes they are fireworks; ones intended to be thrown at the ground by your feet. Based on the comments one might have thought I shot them off kids heads William Tell style.

I fell like the blanks have some potential to fly back. Don't ask me how I know but shotgun shells w/o shot can fly back when shot in the primer. Keep um tight, kerp um far away, keep your eyes on and head up. You will be fine.

As a reference I remember watching a mythbusters where they were setting of live rounds( not blanks) in an over and rounds that were not in a gun could not produce a projectile that had hardly any energy as they just blew out the side of the case. I think at most you were in danger of putting out an eye if you were not wearing safety glasses. But probably not even that since you were 30 yards away.

Rope chuckerYou can't even reload them the end of the shell is rolled in on itself. I wanted to give them to a friend who reloads and he said he couldn't use them. Ithey were given to me a couple years ago and now I have about 180 of them and nothing to do with them, I tried selling them a couple times but no takers so now I'll just shoot at them I guess.

If you fired the blanks in a rifle you might be able to trim off the crimped section and have usable brass but I doubt it would be worth the effort. I would just go to a public shooting range the weekend before deer season opens. There are always some Elmer Fudd types who will burn two or three boxes of ammo sighting in and leave the brass on the ground. On common rounds like 06 you can pick up a two gallon bucket easily.

If your friend can't salvage them with a full length sizing die, then plinking the beejeebers out of them is probably their best use now.
