Replacement for a .22 Benjamin Trail NP?

I picked up a .22 Benjamin Trail NP about 6 years ago when we bought our small 6 acer homestead and the gun has been invaluable!!! I've used it to drive away large flocks of winged varmints ;-), killed a dozen groundhogs, made some great rabbit dinners out of some furry friends that were eating our garden, drove off a couple coyotes, and even killed a doberman from a wild pack that was attacking our alpaca's.

I've always meant to replace the trigger but never got around to it. My only other complaint is I wish there was a way to have iron sights in addition to the scope. Because of the layout of our property 95% of my shots are from my back porch and I'm either shooting less than 20 yards or in the 50-70 yard range (across a pond). So I keep the scope sighted in for the far side of the pond. I've gone so far as considered adding a 45degree rail and a red dot scope for near range. :-D

I've put about 5000 rounds through the gun but it's recently lost all its power. :-( I'm guessing the gasket on the piston has developed a problem. I've cleaned the barrel and the rifling looks good, but depending on the fit of a particular pellet sometimes the gun doesn't even have enough power to clear it from the barrel. I've seen the pellet bounce off the hide of a groundhog at 20 feet!!!

I don't have a spring compressor which I assume I need to repair it... I don't even know where I would take it to get repaired. Should I try to find someone to repair it and then upgrade my trigger and add a second sight system somehow? Or just replace the gun? Thoughts?

Any replacement I'd like to keep under $400. Would like some form of duel sight system because of my two ranges (and 50-70 yards is a bit far for me to make without a scope, given the drop on a .22 air rifle). Consider the major goal of the rifle to take out groundhogs. Thanks for any advice!!! :)

You might want to consider a Disco, by varying the scope mounts and some checking with chairgun the gun can easily do it all for you. A 3x9X32 bugbuster using the medium mounts sits 1.5" over the barrel. A 12 yd zero will take you out to the 40 yd range with under an inch high in the middle ranges. Simple dot holdovers for further distances. By jacking up the scope height your zeros can be stretched out, disregard the dots and magnification and memorize the inch holdover amount for 5 10 and 15 yards put a 20 zero and take note of second along with the arc and distance in the midranges. Crosman Friday deals along with the Agnation discount is pretty appealing

Honestly my Trail NP was my first gun of any kind that's ever even had a scope :p I've always shot small game with iron sights. I had no idea that changing the mount height affected anything (yea I'm an idiot)...

I was looking at the Trail NP XL but this my non XL going bad after 6 years has me a little annoyed.... It's been a decent gun but I've not ever been super enamored with it, be it the trigger or whatever. Spent the day looking at Maximus, Discovery, & Marauder. Money isn't really an issue but I don't exactly hunt with it so I don't really feel like I need to blow a lot of $ on a replacement. I just need something reliable for basic farm varmint hunting and fun to plink with. I Never had a PCP but the Discovery looks like it could fit the bill.

I like oldspook's recommendation of the laser for short range too (never even considered that)! Bagged that last 3 groundhogs around the house with the 9mm since the air rifle has been out.... will be nice to have a lethal air gun again.

I'd go with the marauder or maximus . The disco and maximus are the same platform but if I'm not mistaking the maximus has a longer barrel. And that should make for more accuracy. I got the disco and it's been a great gun. And we have a marauder wish is a fantastic gun. But a pcp gun is really nice to have. The only downfall to the disco and maximus is there a little loud but u can buy a aftermarket moderator which helps alot. But I'd opt for the marauder it's very quiet and accurate in the .25 with a green Mountain barrel. The .177 and .22 have crossman barrels.

If you're not wanting to jump into PCP rifles id look Hard at the HW95 they had on sale at AOA !! For the money I honestly don't think it can be beat . As far as multiple ranges just do what most guy do . Zero at one distance and figure out where the other range stuff will line up with a mildot recticle or something similar. If it a variable power scope that second focal plane ( most are) then you can use the magnification to make a particular dot line up exactly where you need .

Don't just throw your rifle away. Its simple to build a springer press? Biggest part of that is a c-clamp cut in half. Its nice to have one even on new springers to break down and clean up the inside of the gun when new. They can be as fancy or as rough as you want to make them. Anyway buy a new rifle but always rebuild the one that has worked for you for years.

Yea I'll keep it around and repair it swap the trigger etc...when I have time for sure. Just need to source a new gasket.

hello. iam bran new to airgun nation. for the last 4 years ive tried a lot of springers.spent a lot of money the hatsan 125 sniper in 25 calto the rws diana 34. i find now that had some one been there to let me try these gun no doubt i would have gone right to the rws or hw. these are truly quality guns. yes they have a higher price tag then your np trail.will the rws last a life time? i do my best to keep it perfect working order and ive never heard a bad word about them. my frend is on this fourm he knows this gun and us shooting out to 60 yards. my groups are 2 to 3 inch. ihave the rws 3x9x40ao with the rws mount.she shoots flat out to35 and using the post in the crosshairs i can hit a knock down reset target at 50. hope this gives u something to look at good hunting.

If you really want to use irons and a scope, there are scope mounts made for that - "see-thu" mounts. I use them on powder burners because I hunt deer in bad weather and half the time my scope is foged or full of snow. The kind that work with a weaver style base might work depending on how high your iron sighs sit. Someone makes one that attaches right to an airgun/.22 dovetail that works great on a pcp or pumper (I use it on my blue streak) but I'm thinking it wouldn't stand up to a springer's recoil. "Quick sight" I think is the brand.

Peace bro,

Andy

My two cents 😀. Get a marauder .25, have or install a denounce for more shots. Dead nuts accurate, good support, available parts, multi shot. A lot of ammo, both pellets and bullets shoot well out of the .25, and it's quiet. You can go from 40 ft lbs to 100 depending on what you want to spend. I owned one that was tuned and wish I had not sold it. I will be buying another one. That being said, if money is not the object, look into a evanix rainstorm .22 or .25.
