RAW HM 1000x .25 or .30 for 100 yards and beyond?

Hello. New guy here. I'm ready to buy my first high end PCP. Have a .22 mrod but I need more! After months of research, comparing everything on the market and lots of soul searching I have decided on a RAW HM 1000x. in .25 cal. with the carbon fiber bottle. I just placed an order for this gun with Straight Shooters yesterday but I can still change it if i do it soon. My thing is long range target shooting. By long range I mean as far as I can push it. More than 100 yards. Whats the limit? I want to find out. 175? 200? I currently shoot my Marauder to 125 but thats about all she will do accuracy wise and its not great at that distance. I don't have a lot of wind to contend with most of the time. So my question is this. Is the .25 or .30 better for this? From what I have read the .25 should have a flatter trajectory from this gun than the .30. The HM 1000x pushes the JSB 25.39 in .25 cal at 980 fps while the .30 pushes the. JSB 44.75 to around 880 fps. I went with the .25 because of pellet selection and cost and because I think the flatter trajectory will serve me better. But I really like the idea of having a .30 cal air rifle! They seem to be all the rage these days. However the .25 seems, more practical. I guess I'm looking for some validation that I made the right choice. What say you experts? Thanks.

I think you should stick with the .25 for all the reasons you listed. The only compelling reason to choose a .30 would be if you planned on hunting at long range in addition to target shooting. Consider the following:

.25 HM1000x
  • 689 fps @ 100 yards /26.8 ft/lb
  • 506 fps @ 200 yards /14.4 ft/lb
  • 367 fps @ 300 yards /7.6 ft/lb
  • 264 fps @ 400 yards /3.9 ft/lb
.30 HM1000x
  • 665 fps @ 100 yards /46.1 ft/lb
  • 510 fps @ 200 yards /27 ft/lb
  • 389 fps @ 300 yards /15.8 ft/lb
  • 293 fps @ 400 yards /9 ft/lb
The .25 would not have retain enough energy at 300 yards to kill a rabbit whereas the .30 does.

Ya I like learning about ballistics. It is interesting stuff.

I know it looks like Straight Shooters has them in stock but they don't. I had to place my order and now I'm on the waiting list. They said 12 to 14 weeks out. Rapid Air confirmed this. Its going to be a long painful wait.

I went with the walnut thumb hole stock, carbon fiber bottle. those two options shave about two pounds off a ten and a half pound gun. I also opted for the carbon fiber wraped barrel. RAW says it adds some rigidity and weather proofing to the barrel, and of course a little bling as well.

I guess I should mention also the the gun may be used for occasional pesting up to raccoon size critters. Target shooting will be its main purpose but having a versatile gun is important. This will likely be my only high end gun. I just got a ShoeBox compressor and a Tiger Shark 4,500 psi tank from Joe Brancato recently (great guy to deal with btw and a very nice tank set up) This is a very expensive hobby to get into. But I am having a blast so far! Its fun introducing other people to it as well.

Sounds like you have a beautiful rifle on the way...Martin has a great selection of walnut for makings stocks.
I know the wait is going to be long, but you'll find out it is well worth the wait. I waited for mine for over 8 months, but I had to wait for a custom rifle barrel to be made available.
You can never have enough "Bling" on a rifle, and the carbon fiber wrapped barrel sounds fantastic with the carbon fiber bottle!
Hope the time passes quickly for you, and look forward to your review once you get it

The barrel that Martin ordered for me is the most accurate barrel I've had the pleasure of shooting. Is it more accurate than a standard LW...YES. Martin did not give me any details on the barrels except for how much extra it was going to cost...around $350. Martin just calls them his premium barrels. I know that his testers were extremely impressed with this barrel and wanted to keep it for themselves. but luckily, It became mine.
You can try to get more information out of Martin...good luck there...lol.
I can definitely say it is not a Benchmark or a Krieger Barrel...Who made it????? Can't say... Would I get another one... YES
Would I recommend them to others...YES,,,,,Especially if the rifle is going to be used in competition. Martin's set-up on my rifle is the reason why I did so well at the Extreme Bench Rest.
If you're going to get one, you might be waiting longer than 12 weeks for the rifle to be completed if he does not have these barrels in stock.
But, the wait is definitely worth it.

Found it to be quite accurate with a variety of pellets from Crossman premiers to H&N Barracudas, but the one pellet I found to be most accurate was the JSB's 18.1g with a 5.53 head....My barrels a 22.
I do tend to keep my barrels clean...using cleaning patches every 500 shots
Have not done any kind of testing beyond 100 yards, but at 100 yards, I was able to put together sub 1 inch groups....with the avg. at 1.35 inches outdoors.

Thats awesome Mike! Yes the JSB 18's seem to be the go too pellet for most .22 PCP rifles. My Marauder likes them as well though they are about tyed with the Baracuda's.

Ya thanks travel4fun for posting that velocity over distance comparison. I keep referring back to it as I am thinking about all this stuff. Just showed it it my brother. he found it interesting also.
I want a .25 in a certain configuration and am willing to wait but thanks for the offer.

If the new jsb king heavy's are accurate in the rifle you have ordered that would be real nice. They seem to have a bc of around 0.054 and the jsb .30 44 grainers a bc of around 0.042 This meas that at some point down range the .25 is more powerfull then the .30! Just ordered 600 jsb heavy's from slovenia. Can't wait to see if they are accurate in my gun.

RC-NL Ya good luck! I will try those out to. Also the Benjamin Sheridan domed 27.5 seem to have a bc of .048 again higher than .30 44gn. I have been interested in trying this pellet for a while now but don't have a .25 yet. So the JSB heavy is a new pellet? Pyramid air doesn't have them yet. What is the weight of those? Here is the RAW I ordered check out the test results. http://www.straightshooters.com/rapid-air-hm1000x-.25-regulated-walnut-right-hand-t-h-with-quick-fill-gauge-carbon-fiber-bottle.html
