Rapid Air Weapons .357 mini novice review & pictures,

I'm not any type of expert in shooting, writing reviews or photography but thought some who may not have heard of this model might like to hear something about the rig anyway.
I recently had a chance to fire just a few rounds through the Second Generation RAW HM1000x in .357 cal. and I darn sure wish I had more time as I was very kindly invited to stay and go over to the 200 yard range for some serious testing.
This is a regulated rifle made in Tennessee by RAW, they even managed to find a US barrel manufacturer who could deliver a Bench rest quality barrel in .35 ( .357). This one had the newly designed Walnut BR stock but I believe other stock option do exist for those I interested more in hunting or???? . It delivers 14 shots on the regulator with an extreme spread of 13fps at a very respectable 940fps using the 81g ( right?) JSB .35 pellets but as it uses a 6 round clip "I" would just fire 12 shots and then refill. Power could be bumped up a bit higher but 940fps seemed the best while considering shot count, extreme spread and naturally, accuracy.
This is a rifle with Bench rest accuracy and also has the power to take any animal you could legally hunt in the U.S. with an airgun which makes it, to me, much more useful than some other big-bores which might be able to do one or the other but not both. Shooting at a rather short range of 85 yards without the scope being zeroed correctly ( the scope was just taking off another rifle so I was holding off the target right and low) firing at a large .22 RF spinner I was easily able to place full clips in a very respectable group in the center of the spinner and it had PLENTY of power to spin it over & over, good clean fun!

The scope rail does have mil-spec spacing

Hopefully this gives you some idea of stock shape and note the rather HUGE six shot clip

other side

very nice hand stippling

My friend Jeff also found it very easy to hit the target first try,

Ya thanks for the review! I do like that stock and I really like that new receiver. I'm very tempted to cancel my order for my HM1000x .25 walnut thumb hole version and reorder the new version. But I just can't bring myself to wait another four months.
I just caught the tail end of the first gen. Just my luck.
I assume that the only difference on the new receiver is the top rail? Anyone know? Are there any internal differences?
And wow 940 fps with the 81.02 grain, that's 159 fpe! The .30 cal only shoots around 840 fps. I wonder why? The .25 shoots the 25 gr JSB at around 980 fps. Does the .30 not fly as well at higher speeds?

Probably need to recheck your numbers. 940 fps with 81 gr pellets would put the power output at 158 FPE. All the reviews I've seen has this gun around 700 fps and under 90 FPE. I would post the video review but it has a non-sponsored retailer logo and it would get zapped here. Jim Chapman reviewed it also and his power numbers were about the same, 88-90 FPE.

Blackdiesel,

This is the Second Generation HM1000x and no one has done any video review of this rifle and Jim did use the older generation for his hunting
(I know where that rifle is, it is not at all the same). The 940fps with JSB .35 pellets is correct and that gives just over 2 clips - 6 shots per clip- within a 14fps extreme spread.
Hopefully someone with hunting and video skill with step up and show what this model can do soon but what got me was just how well it grouped! This is a new standard for high powered airguns. I "used" to think my old DAQ ( and Denis does make a value rifle) was accurate as long as you filled it to just the correct amount, took one shot and refilled but this rifle is in an entirely different league, bench rest quality groups!
Dave, I have nothing to compare it to , certainly louder than a Marauder ( that seems a well known standard) but nothing like a big-bore I have ever heard, closest I can think of would be the Career 707II with Anthony Storey M/B ??

Everyone should attend Field Target matchs , yes everyone there has a FT rigs but airgunners are notorious for having more than one airgun right?

"Ok. Remind me never to shoot one. I have airgun hoarder tendencies and I’m sure I would want one after shooting it. If the older models cost $2000 I’m sure this one will be well north of that

"

According to their web site $1900 & $1950 for thumb hole stock. Of course if you can add extras to make it more expensive. I may have one of these eventually but I am going with a .25 cal first.

I should say I have nothing to do with RAW, I just like shooting their rifle a lot. I also like shooting most any airgun I've not tried before.
I cant figure out quoting and answering so,

The facts I post from shooting are the facts I know first hand. Otherwise I surf around like most folks.
How is the power increased? Reading on facebook I see: " latest generation in high efficiency stainless steel valve."

Folks who like the aesthetics might also want to look at a thread I made in the competition section as it shows some of RAW different configurations:
http://airgunnation.dev/topic/gob-field-target-report-9-5-2015-and-some-pictures-3/

The .357 I fired the other day was ( I believe ???) special order and perhaps most people would want to use something in the 88fps range? I am not sure.
The stock on the rifle, I "believe" is a new model that could be ordered with any rifle?
I am not certain a CF bottle would clear on that model, and naturally I could be wrong.
The barrel is U.S. made and will shoot either pellets or solids (reckon that took a while to figure out and get into production).

I am fairly sure - could be wrong- the price of the second generation rifles is about the same and is listed on the website.

I AM certain there is a waiting list, so if you really want any RAW rifle you either need to find a stocking dealer with something in inventory, or, be prepared to wait. Which in our modern instant gratification doesn't suit everyone. For me it was well worth the wait to get an HM1000 .22 thumbhole ( and thumb-up) stock, and I kept it simple by saying I wanted a .22, quite , lighter than Laminate, regulated, period.

Personally while the .357 was a hoot to shoot ( oh ya!) "I" would be a bit torn between it and a .25 - well and maybe a .30 but ammo?-. And "I" do think I would want to .357 if wanting ( oh and I DO) to shoot the true Extreme Bench Rest 200 event.

Anyone really wants information I don't have anymore, perhaps patiently watching facebook and or reading Foreign (that's non U.S. to me) forums might be a good way to go.

Hey and everyone needs to get to a Field Target match!

John

I emailed Martin at RAW to ask him about the new second generation HM1000X .357 and below is the answer I got from him (copy/paste)

We have a new version of the 357 about to come out, it has a 28" barrel
and can shoot those 81gr at speeds around 840fps regulated, you will be
down to approx 14 shots though, or unregulated they can shoot up around
930-940 with a 50fps power curve, which is typically how you see
unregulated rifles, 50fps being the standard variation for obtaining
figures, personally the regulated version shot so nice I would not waste
your time for the higher velocities.

Regards

Martin

My .357 HM1000X is regulated and at 100 yards I can shoot Quarter size groups all day long with 81 gr. There is always the occasional flyer. I am very Happy......the squirrels are not. I love these rifles! Out to 100 yards nothing is safe. I have shot against the 22 LR guys and smoke-um. Everyone under estimates the accuracy and power of air guns.......shame on them. They find out the hard way every time. Martin thank you. regards-Hunter

If you can afford the RAW...............get one. period

Hi 30 cal. My HM1000X is on it's way to Seattle and I won't be there until the end of next month from NZ. I was resigned to the wait but sure am looking forward to bringing it home and hitting the range. Mine is coming with the picatinny installed without having asked for it and I'm happy with that. This is my venture into .25 cal, except for the .250 Sav.

So hold your horses you'll have yours before I do. Best wishes to you and may she be a beaut shooter. Are you watching the Rugby World Cup? Japan beat South Africa in the upset to beat all upsets, 34 - 32. It was great to watch, as for up your way....Go the Hawks!
