Pest Control

Hi All,

Im sure this has been asked before, but was hoping for some assistance. Im looking for a pellet gun for pest control. My targets will range from Chipmunk, Grey Squirrel, and possibly Coyote. All of which I have spotted in my yard or on my bird feeders. The gun doesnt need crazy range, 10-15yards with pinpoint accuracy would suffice. My price range is 100-150$.

I currently have an old Gamo Spectra .177 that was my father in laws. I put a new scope on it and is pretty accurate. I have taken shots at quite a few chipmunks and squirrels. And while i think im hitting them, they do take off. My concern is im merely wounding them, causing a slow and painful death. Which is not my intent.

I have done alot of reading and have found the Gamo Whisper Silent Cat (.177) has great reviews for both power, range, and accuracy. However it leads me to believe it will have the same result as my current Gamo, and would not be sufficient for potential Coyotes.

This leads me to thinking a .22 cal is the way to go. This will ensure a more humane and quick kill on the smaller pests, as well as potentially taking out a coyote.

The two guns I have been looking into are the Crosman Nitro Venom and the Crosman Nitro Crusher (New model i believe).

Please let me know you thoughts or suggestions on a gun that may do the job better in my price range. Also please keep in mind i do have a good aftermarket scope i all ready have purchased. And that the max range im dealing with is 10-15yds.

Thank you for any info you can provide.

Hello MaAirgunner. I'm afraid coyotes will be out of the question for the type of guns you are looking at. Also you are not likely to ever get that close to one. You would need a minimum of a .25 cal PCP. .30 or .357 would be even better. But they are overkill for the chipmunks. A .177 or .22 spring gun is fine for squirls and chipmunks. You would really need two guns for what you want to do. Accuracy can be hit or miss on the inexpensive guns you are looking at. You may get a decent one or you may be frustrated by it. Good luck.

I have the Nitro Venom and its a tack driver when you figure out artillery holds. It eats cheap scopes tho. As far as Coyote. I wouldn't with the .22. Ive taken 2 with the .25 but they were perfect 20 yard, side head shots, that planked them out in there tracks. I passed on numerous others because they weren't perfect and I didn't want them to suffer. I wont shoot coyotes with the .25 again.

Awesome info guys thanks. The Gamo Spectra I have is a .177, I just cant imagine im missing a live target. Especially when i can group 10 shots in a milk cap at the same distance. Is it possible the gun just doesnt have the power to penetrate? I ask because at 30ft my pellets get stuck in 1/4in ply wood. My cousins .22 blows holes right thru the plywood at that range.

I have been using the artillery hold for a while now after reading about it on previous posts. Im no master but i think i have it down judging mt my target groups. I just hope im not wounding the little guys to die slow and painful deaths.

As for the coyotes. They are common in my area. And ballsy to say the least. Its not uncommon to come out and have a couple around the hen house. They will stand there and look at me 15ft away, and only run off when i come down and chase them. I could put a .22 in their eyeball if the gun had the accuracy.

Slow down MaAirgunner, take a breath, and think about what you're spending money on. You could have had a Benjamin 397 new from amazon for about ten dollars more. Your gamo will take at least 100, if not more shots to settle in, and even then it may not be what you want as far as accuracy. Your current rifle is likely good enough.

What range was the old gun zeroed for? If 20-30 yards then anything closer will require holdover, and if at 15yds easily one or more mil-dots or the equivalent of if the scope has just cross hairs.

I have a B-3 underlever that won't break a beer bottle at 25yds(most of the time) but will surely dispatch a chippy at that range so maybe they are bonafied misses?

If you go a little further expense wise and go the springer route.... $299 will get you a Weihrauch HW95 from Airguns of Arizona that is on a close out. These are usually $450 minimum. A great deal for sure, and will put out anywhere from 13 to 16 ft Ib's stock. It can do anything you want it to, and is a proven hunting and field target platform. Way more reliable than any of the Gamo's and those of a similar price point, and it stops the Walton family from getting richer! Bleed once, and buy once.
