JSB pellet variance can-to-can

For you to name two different pellet brands you must think there is a difference?

Acutally, the pellet on the left is a JSB Exact King and the pellet on the right is a JSB Exact King.

I have Four cans of these and the first can I opened the pellets were ALL like the one on the left. The second can I opened the pellets were ALL like the ones on the right. So not so "exact" die-to-die. I see quite a bit of variance. Unfortunately I shot up the first can before noticing, so I can't really test the difference now. I can tell you the first can (pellet on left) had many more bent up skirts and deformations.

The first thing that is really noticeable is the difference in skirt thickness, the other noticeable difference is the diameter of the punch at the bottom is a lot bigger on the left pellet.

Linsfreak, I noticed the difference immediately when I opened a new can, I just happened to have a couple of pellets left from the first can for pictures, so I cannot get a good test. And I just tuned my gun, so the results would be skewed.

Regardless of slight changes in die stamp, the .22 JSBs are all batch tested and the pass standard is 50 yard groups of 16 mm and under for .22s and 12 mm for .177s average for 5 groups in a tunnel. If batches don't pass that test they don't get out of the factory. ... I know no other pellet maker who has any such standard.

Some batches will shoot better than others. I think the factory uses AA and Daystate rifles for testing but there may be others. Every manufactured item has a tolerance. .
Presently I have some H@N .177 Baracudas which are shooting exceptionally well, stamped 4.50 mm and last week had groups down to 0.18 " at 50 yards at 20 fpe from my TM 1000 and LW barrel. Have not seen H@N that good before.
If you want to make some comparisons, buy a tin of Gamos ! ... Kind regards, Harry.

With the new tin (of JSB 18.13gr) there are more flyers at 25meters so started weighing. Both new tins have a weight range from 17.90gr to 18.51gr.

Next to measure the pellets head diameter and skirt lengths and diameter.

Also, 12 or so pellets drop fully without any resistance in the FX Impact mag but 5-6 in the middle of the mag tend not to. Maybe mags issue as its almost always the same slots in all 3 mags. A few lead shavings in each mag as well now.

Can to can? I have some 25 cal Kings with similar variance in the same can. They seem to shoot well and I get to blame the pellets when I miss.

Yes there was a distinct difference from one can to another. That's the reason I didn't notice until I opened the second can.

Someone mentioned they get tested before leaving the factory, but I don't care what kind of test you run, if they are visibly different, then there is a change. Bullets, pellets, should always be the same for accuracy. Just because the change doesn't affect the poi of the guns the factory tests with doesn't mean it won't affect all the other guns out there.

Another comment was to compare Gamo to JSB. I don't expect variance in my high end pellets just because there are cheaper, worse pellets out there.

This gives some sort of idea of what varying pellet head size does. 25m distance. No change in zero, sim middle of target.

Awaiting delivery of 5.53 JSB 18gr as 5.52 (& 5.54) are not doing do well out of the FX ST barrel.

FX 16gr pellet tin says 5.52 but majority are 5.53. sorted some out on pelletgage and results below.

Pulled one (top hole) in the middle 10 shot 5.53 group and without it the group is 12.8mm.

Yes, I was a little concerned when I saw the variation in that tin. But 20 to 40 yards represents 95% of my shooting and the variation is not such a big deal. If I shot 100 yards I would sort the pellets. That said, I roasted a crow at 60 yards out of the top of a pine tree this afternoon. Opened a new tin from the same sleeve and found same variation. Bought these pellets two years ago so current production may be improved.
