New to the air gun world and Gamo questions....

Hello to all - I'm new to the club as I purchased a couple of Gamo rifles during the WalMart clearance sale a few weeks ago. I got these to get my kids started in the shooting sports and to use for inexpensive practice.I've started the research on proper technique (artillery hold / follow through) and ordered some higher quality pellets to get started.

I keep reading about wandering scope bases and bad scopes with these Gamo guns but many of the posts are a bit older. Have these issues been resolved on the new(er) models ? It appears the my rifles have two holes drilled to accept the inegrated scope/mount unit.

Also I have read to not use any sort of petroleum based cleaner ( some say to never clean) for cleaning the barrel. Most all agree to never use anything but a nylon brush or patch....and yet the Gamo cleaning kit I bought has a brass brush included.....? Also I've read to scrub the barrel in BOTH directions when cleaning which goes against what I've learned regarding cleaning barrels.

I'm sure I will have many more questions but if you could help me get started I would appreciate any and all input.

Hello,

I'll try to answer some of your questions:

The scopes that come with from Walmart are considered the lowest quality scopes, but they do work. Just try to look thru them in the same way, placing your cheek in the same spot.

As far as cleaning, I just use Hope's #9 solvent. I wet a patch with it and will slide it from the breech, than follow with dry patches until they no longer have any black on them.
I clean only from the breech, never from the crown. I do this every 500 rounds or so. I don't use brush.

Welcome to the forum. Will try to give you some pointers in the right direction as best I can. There are those here way more knowledgeable than me, so I hope they can chime in. It really is going to boil down to what you want to do with the guns and what you want to get out of them. Nice clearance deal on a Gamo at WM if you are teaching the kids and shooting some cans in the back yard is perfectly acceptable. If these are break-barrels/springers, the scope that come with them are worthless for the gun in question. You can put it on a rim fire .22 and it will serve you well for being a cheap scope. The problem is the spring guns will destroy them in no time at all. You will be faced with buying a scope that cost you as much as the gun itself. So, use the iron sights, or buy a better scope. If you are after accuracy and or hunting etc, you may want to research higher end rifles. Check out the HW30 as a good starting point. Then there are the PCPs, very accurate, very expensive overall, and a deep deep hole that will suck you in and take all your money with it.

"Bondservant2"These Gamo are of the IGT variety....so not spring.

I keep hearing that air guns are hard on scopes......is a quality center fire scope useable ....? or do I need something air gun specific.....

For all intents and purposes IGT will be the same a spring when it comes to how they function on the gun and it’s affecting the scope. There may could be the argument that perhaps not as much, but generally speaking, you want an Airgun rated scope on any type of breakbarrel gun. Gas or Spring, no matter. A quality center fire rifle scope that is not rated for spring guns can be potentially damaged by a spring gun. PCPs will not damage your centerfire scope.
