I think I'm going to get a hw 30

Nice to see people researching then posting what they personally came up with.
Excellent choice in a springer and that link joek posted is an outstanding value and should hold that value.
Personally would worry about the linked QC post from '12.
Run 1-1,500 shots through it and see just how it is. A tune can be nice but more so - to me anyway- on higher power rifles, I wouldnt even adjust the trigger for 500 shots.

Didnt know they now had so many "HW30" models.

+1 for the HW30 Jason, a really nice choice. The gun is super light, the trigger is great, and the barrel will eat many pellet with superb accuracy. It is a great gun if you just want to relax/plink or shoot killer short range groups - I've had many one hole groups at 20 yards (scoped).

Just a heads up, one of my three HW30's has a bit of barrel droop & requires a compensating mount for the scope. As others have suggested, shoot the gun for a bit and enjoy. My 1st HW30 started shooting at a low muzzle velocity & upon tear down I found a cut piston seal. I replaced with a Vortek tune kit and am really happy with the results - it has the same muzzle velocity but even less recoil than stock. I know, hard to believe but true.

Accuracy on htis airgun is awesome, BUT... you have to remember that this is only a 7.5 Joule or 5.5fpe gun! So no 1000 fps cr@p or shooting a boar out to 100 yards with this one! But for target shooting out to say 50 or 70 feet (yes ppl do that too!) it is great.

Pros
  • "Rekord" trigger
  • Accuracy
  • Sound, or to be more accurate (pun intended ;-)) lack thereof. This gun is real silent. Not like US backyardfriendle (you call 100 dBa backardfriendly...) but like European backyard friendly. You know in Europe everybody has small houses with small properties and people are afraid of guns, (because they are bad bad bad!) so they call the police when they take notice of shots fired! Not so with the HW30, it is that quiet! (But then it is ONLY 5.5fpe, so no bragging to your friends about lobbing big slug of lead onto a target a couple of hundred yards away...;-) )
  • Ability to use the frontsight as a diopter. (you have to buy the rear diopter piece separate)

Cons:
  • The grip is a little to flat (ie the opposite of a vertical pistol grip) so it lacks a bit ergonomy for when you have average size hands. (But for the average US redneck with bearpaws it should be great!)
  • Safety is not resettable, (but there is a hack: recock the gun to reset the safetyBoth: the front and rear sights are made of the "old"metal type. This is good as it allows for more accurate aiming, (as the posts are narrower and more clearly defined) but not good when you get older and the eyesight starts to diminish; then it would have been easier if it had the so called "truglo" sights.

Bottom line: great gun!

As an alternative I can recommend the Diana 21 Panther, as it has all the pros as listed above, and a resettable trigger and the ergonomy is better. And it has a truglo sight. (only drawback is you have more trouble mounting a diopter on the end of the barrel. (need to replace the plastic truglo barrel end with something else) And it has a polymer stock (can be an advantage, but wood is nice too...)

Jason,

If you are lucky, you may avoid the dreaded HW30S galling issues.

The below is a photo of my brand new 0.177" HW30S, with no shots through it by me.

You can see the galling caused by the cocking arm knuckle on the cylinder, and the two divots (arrowed) are where the cocking arm knuckle rests on the breech block.

The cocking arm foot also gauged the sides of the cocking slot.

The spring was badly S-shaped, and the piston seal burnt and torn. This was all from the test shots at the Factory :(

I remediated all the scuffs, put two (2) ptfe blocks in the cocking arm to act as bearings, fitted a Vortek PG2 kits, lubed properly (Krytox GPL105 oil & 205 grease), and the HW30S now shoots superbly :)

A shame it wasn't fit for purpose from the Factory :(

Have fun & a good weekend :)

Best regards

Russ
