Hunting in Puerto rica

I've spent the last two winters here in PR; this season's stay is just about up. I've seen the iguanas frequently; big ones, too. They don't seem shy and they're pretty dumb, too; the number of road kills is astounding 'cuz they'll come right out on the pavement to sun. I'd heard they were becoming a nuisance but figured with all this greenery they could munch to their heart's content without causing any real damage. Now I find that they burrow and undermine road surfaces and they do damage to the vegetation. Outside my deck I can see a very scraggly tree; yesterday there was a 2/3 footer high up eating what's left of its foliage. Lots of other trees around so that may be a favored food; maybe the leaves are tender? Anyway the plant looks like a goner at this point. So, my interest in plunking these critters is two-fold; give me something to do during the day and make a small dent in the island's pest problem. I'm just starting research on a suitable pellet gun; saw a good review of the Gamo Silent Cat .177 which is reputed to be accurate and affordable. Anyone got another recommendation under $200?

Also, I've seen conflicting info on whether you need a permit? And, do folks go nutso when they hear a pellet gun fired? Seems to be pretty much anything-goes down here but I don't want to run afoul of La Policia!

I just composed a long post then it got accidentally deleted I'll recompose it if anyone can give me some info about hunting these critters in the Rincon, PR area. I've stayed here in PR the past two winters; this season's stay is almost over. I see big iguanas all the time. They don't seem shy; in fact they seem pretty stupid! So, while stalking skills may not be necessary, I do need an air rifle that will hit 'em and take 'em down without marksman-like skills. I'm not an experienced hunters but hitting these seems like a fish-in-the-barrel deal; they'll hang out on a branch munching with little fear. Anyone got a recommendation on a suitable weapon? I've seen good reviews on a gun called the Gamo Silent Cat .177; is there a competitor I should look at under $200? That's what I'd want to budget for this hobby.

Jordan, I'm looking at the Crossman Shock Wave .22 that's selling for around $100. It's getting good reviews at that price point. I can do some practice shooting with it in MA before bringing it down next season. On this permit deal, do they give you a formal written, official-looking permit, or is it done on a handshake basis? Also, should I be getting a gun with the built-in silencer feature, or does it make that much difference?

Hi john here, I don't know if you found anything out about hunting licences for iguanas, but the form is from the government, and it's from the d.r.n.a. That's the department of natural and environmental resources. I will try and download you the form but it's in English. I have been told you do need one and the civil authority guys do checks, but this could be for public land and not private. I would get one just in case and it costs 25 dollars. But it could take some time so get one in plenty of time before you go. Can't send the form but if you give me your email address I will send it to you. Hope this helps.
