Hatsan Edge Vortex .22 won't fire...

I've searched the forums but can find no mention of my problem. If I missed one or more I'm sorry. Now to my problem.I bought a Hatsan Edge Vortex 30 Nov 2015, just before I found out I needed shoulder replacement surgery. I just started firing it last month and was really enjoying it. I was getting dime size groups after sighting it in but after about 100 shot I cocked it but it won't fire. Hatsan told me that the Vortex Piston is shot and OUT OF WARRANTY! Only 100 shots through it and out of warranty???

Does anyone have a solution for this problem? Do I have to go to Hatsan for a new Vortex Piston? I didn't like the treatment I got from them so I'd prefer to deal with another company if possible. How much for a new Vortex Piston shipped to 46526 (Goshen, IN - USA)? And I'll need a compression tool I suppose as well. How much do they run? Maybe it would be just as economical to just buy a new gun and maybe not a Hatsan.

Suggestions -

Did Hatsan just diagnose this over the phone or via email? You say it won't fire. Please tell us more. What exactly happens after it's cocked and you pull the trigger? I'm no expert but I can't imagine the gas piston taking a dump that fast. After you disengage the safety & pull the trigger does it engage and "click"? I would think if the gas piston is completely shot there wouldn't be any resistance when cocking the gun.

Hatsan diagnosed this via email. There's not much else for me to describe. I had been firing for about 20 minutes with no problems. I cocked the gun, loaded a pellet, sighted the target, pushed the safety off, pulled the trigger and NOTHING happened. No resistance to the trigger at all. No click. Nothing. I put the safety back on and checked to see if it was cocked - it was. I unloaded the pellet, took the safety off and tried to fire again. STILL NOTHING. No trigger resistance. Put the safety back on with difficulty - it's very stiff now trying to pull it out.
I contacted Hatsan USA and related the above facts and was told that the Vortex Gas Piston had failed. Here's the email from Hatsan:

It sounds to me like the vortex piston in your rifle has failed. When the vortex fails, the gun will cock very easily and the plunger may not spring forward once the trigger has been pulled. The easiest way to double check would be to make sure that the barrel is empty, cock the gun completely, and listen for the trigger. If you can hear the trigger "set" and you can hear the trigger release when it it pulled, that means your vortex piston is dead. If that is the case, we would be happy to either fix the gun at our facility, or send you a new vortex piston if you feel comfortable replacing it yourself.

Your RMA number is 20170811-204. Cost $70 US Please send it to the address below, along with copy of your receipt and a copy of this email. We will repair your item. If it's determined that other issues were caused by something other than manufacture's defect, i.e.user error, tampering, abuse, etc., we'll contact you with a cost of the repair and return shipping before we do any work.

So it's COCKED, no pellet, and now a nice wall decoration. Very sad.

Thanks for the reply. My situation is a bit different. It had been preforming just fine (dime sized groups at 30') and then it didn't. No "sometimes it would and sometimes it wouldn't." The gun is essentially NEW so I don't have a lot of experience with it and did NOTHING but fire it. NO ADJUSTMENTS or modifications. And only have ~ 100 pellets go through it.

But maybe I missed something in the messages that would relate to my situation. At this point, until I hear some advice from someone that has solved this problem I'll just let the beast rest and do nothing to make the problem any worse.

Thanks for trying to help.

If the Vortex piston failed the barrel would practically fall down on it's own when you cocked it. I don't believe that's the case. I'm sure it's something relatively simple to do with anti-bear trap linkage, safety linkage or maybe a pin or spring that's in the trigger group has come loose. It is also possible that the trigger sear has failed but I've never heard of that happening on a Hatsan. Blah, blah, blah. None of this matters of course since you still can't fire the gun. If you lived anywhere near me I'd be happy to take a look at it. I'm in Mid-Michigan.

BTW, the symptoms mentioned in that other linked post sound exactly the same to me.

Thanks for your input. Now the barrel does just about fall after I start the cocking procedure - but of course it's already cocked. So do you have any suggestions for me to try? I've never attacked an air rifle. I've found a link to order a new Vortex Piston from Bulgaria for <$50 shipped (http://www.sotisbg.com). But if you don't think it's a piston problem that would be a waste. Do you happen to know anyone in the Goshen, IN area that could help me? Or a youtube video (I've searched but can't find one).

I like this guy's idea and it doesn't add any expense to solving my problem IF I have to replace the piston.

Here's where I live - in case someone is close by that could help an old man.

Again, THANKS for your assist. - CMG3

Depends Chet. Did you submit your DNA, finger prints & blood sample? Oh, and if you're a veteran name, rank & serial number..........LOL

I think it only took a couple hours when I joined. I'm confident someone will be able to get you shooting again. Great bunch there and here as well. Also lots of old farts like me. It'd be nice if someone happened to be close by that able to help. I'm NO expert but I've got a bunch of break barrels and PCPs including 2 Edge's, a .22 and a .25. The .22 is in a "Striker" stock. The Sriker is the EXACT same rifle but in a wood stock.

Chet, I'm pretty close (Kokomo, IN) but as my thread on the Hatsan Mod 87 reported I was unable to sort out the problem I ran into with the safety. I don't figure having me come up to your place just to say, "Hit it right there with a hammer!" would be of any use to you. I was unwilling to try shipping the gun while it remained in a cocked though unloaded condition - that's the only reason I resorted to "dynamic corrective action" with a hammer. Wish I had more help to give. On the plus side, not one of my Crosman/Benjamin gas piston guns has given me a lick of trouble.

Being out of time (I'm old), without a spring compressor, and wanting to get on with shooting, I ordered another Edge. It has arrived and I've sighted it in and am back to shooting nickel sized groups. Thanks to all for their input. Know anyone that wants a CHARGED UP Hatsan Edge Vortex .22 that won't fire? ALMOST NEW! Less than 100 pellets through it.

Back to poking holes in paper...
