I have had a couple of guys here over the last few weeks reach out to me with very similar stories ..See if any of these sound familiar ?
So a guy lists an item for sale , and gets a PM , email, text or whatever saying those magic words " I'll Take It " .
Cool so the seller changes the thread to Sold or words to that effect and then communication just stops . The " buyer" doesn't make any further effort to send payment and to make it worse starts making excuses or just goes off the grid . ....
Life can come up for anyone and I can see how if something EXTREME came up how a guy might have to back out of a deal. But if you do , why not just reach out to the seller and let him know that you won't be able to make the purchase as fast as possible ???
Most guys are just like me and have a limited " toy fund" and sometimes you have to part with your toys to pay grown up bills . When that happens its frustrating as Hell to be left guessing what the " buyer " is thinking ....Paypal makes life easier with this sort of thing because it is basically instant payment . So if you are buying with PayPal and you get so " busy " you can't send payment ...Man up and tell the buyer the deal is off. Just seems like common courtesy on these things is getting harder and harder to find. ..
What's yalls thoughts ???
OH and PS No this hadn't happened to me in a while , and listing the guys who have talked to me about it would be tacky and pointless... Just seeing what you guys experience has been .

Not everyone has good manners such as yourself Joe. Blame it all on the GOT TO HAVE IT NOW SYNDROME. When something comes up the fact is they are so embarrassed to man up to cancel the commitment and would rather leave others hanging or hate to say this but just don't give a crap about the next person since they haven't put aside at least six months salary allotted as their emergency money as a cushion for just in case. Effectively becoming a liar and a cop out but that is how they live their life on a day to day basis sad to say already spending all of next month's paychecks today. Life is FULL of these people Joe. The fact is there are things people want and simply can not afford. They WANT it but don't really NEED it. Always spending their money before getting their paycheck so to speak. I truly believe that if one simply can not afford to buy then he or she has absolutely no business inquiring about the item for sale and wasting every ones time in the process. Even if I have a disagreement with the seller after I said "I'll take it" I still send payment as promised. Joe this hobby is not a necessity for most folks. You have to be on the higher than middle class to wealthy side to be able to afford it or your kids won't have everything they require to grow up healthy and become productive to society. If you are single then that is another story and spend all you like and when you like since its all on you. Another factual and contributing reason is drug addiction which is never going to end in the USA unless we have a President from the Philippines.
My suggestion is to make a note on all of the flakers and just don't deal with them the next time around. You have that right to inform them that they had left you hanging before and you choose not to deal with them any more.

Years ago I tried to sell my HW35 by posting the offering on the usual "airgun buy sell" venue and just gave up after the hassles of calls from "low ballers", "I'll take it" (but they never do) yada yada yada! What I ended up doing was taking the gun to an airgun show and a fellow there gave me cash on the spot for my asking price after taking a few shots with it.

I've had good results selling stuff like scopes "on line" but I don't even try sell guns that way.

No names etc....

I've bought two items from a member here on the Nation, and with good results in every category. But both times, another member (the same one each time) answered his ad, and posted a low-ball number that would never fly, even on Priceline or Trivago. While I agree with Joe about things coming up, that is not the case here. To me, it is nothing but a cheap shot at another member.

I've been really lucky overall myself when buying and selling . But there's always gonna be tire kickers , and occasionally low ballers .I had a member on another forum that wanted one of the old school guns I work on. OK no problem I told him next one I got in I would give him a shout , let him have first shot at it so to speak . So I send him pics with a price that included shipping and he needed to " think " on it ....... I gave him overnight to " ponder " and listed it the next day and it sold in about an hour . Sure enough he called complaining that I sold it out from under him . I asked him do you want me to holler if deal falls thru ? His response tickled the poop outta me .He said " No need , he didn't have the money " . I guess he just wanted to fuss cause he was broke. Lol

I hear ya JWR,
I don't sell too much online, but I have made quite a few air rifle/related items purchases across several different forums. Only had one dealing that made me think the seller was a little flaky.
I was looking for a Birthday gift for the daughter. She likes to shoot my air rifles and I thought she might like a nice match rifle of her own.

I made an offer on an Anschütz 2002 super air SSP that had an issue with the stock. Sent the seller an email containing my name and location,on a Friday, with a fair offer of 25.00USD less than his asking price. Seller promptly replies same day .... "Well if it does not sell by Sunday you can have it for that sure. How about that?"

I'm thinking .....OK sounds like we have a tentative deal.

Sunday evening at 10:25pm I email seller...."Just checking if you had any bites on the Anschutz 2002. It is 10:20 late Sunday evening here in Indiana. My offer is still good."

No response from seller

Rifle was still for sale on classifieds for the following several days, then eventually marked SPF.

Soooo ...what the heck.

I did just that for an amazon seller a few months ago. He showed a picture and description for a Hatsan Striker 1000x .22 rifle for some 114 or 119 bucks. I order it and a Hammers 3-9x32AO scope(from different seller). I got the scope first. Then, when the rifle package was done being shipped all over half of creation, it finally got to me. The box was creased in the middle (outer box too!), and the Styrofoam padding bits inside were crushed. But, the gun was a Striker all right. A 1000s and .177 caliber too boot! I contacted him and explained what happened. He finally replied some 5 days later if I'd take a 40 dollar refund and keep the item? I told him there's nothing about it I want, it's completely wrong from what I ordered. I want a full refund! I got nothing until I went to Amazon customer service on the phone. And I had to do some digging deep in the site to find it. Number is; (206) 922-0880 for future reference. So anyway, I got t explaining to the lady on the phone what happened up to that point, pointed out where to find what about it, etc. They got my full refund from this deadbeat. I then went to midwayusa.com where I found it even cheaper on sale for $95.99! So it got to me in 2-3 days flat from Missouri, no dents, dings or anything! Gun still shoots great and is getting easier to cock and lock up to shoot.
By the way, the seller I got both my Hammers scopes from that's treated me so very well is called " treadpro". Just thought I'd pass that on. Gave him some good reviews too.

I will admit that there have been rifles I have asked about and decided not to get for various reasons. But I did not say I would get it when asking my questions, and would always explicitly let the seller know I wasn't interested if that was the case. BUT once I say I will take something, I feel morally obligated to complete the deal in a timely fashion. A man is as good as his word.

I agree with your rant.

However, there's an easy way around it:
Add this to your ad: "First person to say I'll take it and send payment wins."
I change ad title to SPF, rather than 'SOLD' for that reason. It lets the buyer know he can't screw around with payment, and it lets those in line know it's not REALLY sold yet if the buyer is a deadbeat.

Usually, I get an "I'll take it. What's your paypal address?" and they send payment within minutes.
If you get paid twice because folks are racing, just return payment through PayPal to the guy who was late with an apology. No fees are incurred when you do that.

You'll also find that the "fairer" your price is, the more competition and speed there is to buy it.
