FX Impact as a Field Target air rifle

So, looking for opinions on the FX Impact as a Field Target air rifle. I always hear magazine fed air guns do't do so great in FT but people are wining with multi shot air guns so why is it I always hear a person needs a single shot airgun? I mean to send it to Allen Z. for a bit of work (if I get one) on it, mostly just have him dial it in for under 12 ft pounds and set my scope and find the right pellet. Maybe have him make a new but pad and put a MEC free position on it, something like that that I can't do. I have a few AR hand grips already I like a lot so that's attractive plus it all fits in a compact case and on a .177 @12 ft pounds it's gotta have 200 shots or more in it. Plus I can purchase an extra cylinder or two and never have to take a tank with me to shoot. And......I can change calibers...What's not to like? So, anyone out there shooting an FX Impact in FT and wants to let me know how it is? I was told that I would be looking at 1/2" at 50 yds on anything AZ does to a rifle for me and Ted won 2016 Airguns of Arizona with one, right? Thanks for any input you folks can provide.

AZBOBCAT,
I have some shoulder issues which is why I am looking for a lighter air rifle. I've had a Walther, Styer, and Anschutz and they have all been too much, except the Walther but that was my first one. Last of the co2 guns they made. And this may double as a hunting air rifle so I am trying to consolidate as much for my money as I can. And this is the closest to a bullpen I've found without the bullpen problem of the ear taking a beating from being right over the hammer. Thanks

I have the Impact with a .22 barrel. I was also planning on using it for FT, but I've had some problems getting it to shoot consistently at 12fpe. At 20fpe though, it shoots well, so I've been using it for HFT and Open FT. It's surprisingly ergonomic, it feels as steady and stable as my Steyr. When it comes to single shot, i'm able to feed the pellets into the breech just with my fingers, even with my large hands. The magazine is nice for practicing, you can put a lot more lead downrange. The trigger is a little heavy, but it's consistent. I haven't had much time to fiddle with it. And as far as walking around an FT course with a rifle, nothing beats an Impact with a bipod.

hunkaluv,
Have you set it up for shooting sub 800 feet per second yet and given it a try? Just curious as so far everything I've read suggests I will have to change out the ST barrel for a Walther or maybe CZ, whatever Allen recommends doing, if I go that route. I just dislike plunking down $1900.00 and then whatever else to change the barrel and all that. But there so much adjustability in the FX Impact it is hard to walk away from it.

My Impact shoots FTT 5.54 the best, at around 780 fps or 19fpe. When I had it set up for 12fpe I think it was a regulator issue, not a barrel issue. I'd get inconsistent shot strings (usually the first shot would be high, second low, then it would find it's happy spot) even if I stopped shooting for a minute. The inconsistent velocities would lead to elevation changes down range, but the side to side would stay good. After a hell of a lot of experimentation with VST, HST and reg pressure (probably thousands of pellets)
I got it to shoot consistently at 19fpe. I just don't think the rifle likes to shoot at 12fpe. I have a 177 barrel on order, so we'll see what happens when I try shooting it at 12fpe in 177.

Most FT specific guns are single shot. So the many top FT shooters that have those guns don't use magazines.

My pre-charge guns that I use for FT (rifle and pistol) use magazines. I always use the magazine when shooting FT.

I don't know why you always hear that you need a single shot.

If you are using a general purpose rifle in field target, and it has a magazine that works reliably, best to use it.

I'm sure that some people have had accuracy problems with the gun when it's under 12fpe, but look at Britain. They are limited to 12fpe and all of their guns seem to shoot just fine, so I am holding off my hesitation till I get the barrel. No one on this forum seems to have a .177 so I can't ask for opinions from anyone else. This means we'll just need to wait and figure out for outselves.

I'm not saying you can't use a magazine for FT, but I think it's generally good etiquette to remove the magazine between lanes. I find it just as easy to single load by hand, without a tray, that's all.

The UK 12fpe version is different than the FAC version. Something about the reg is different, I don't know what though. The 12fpe version can only be tuned down. (Although there's a few vids out there showing you how to remove tamper proofing to tune it up.) As far as I know, I haven't seen anyone report accuracy issues with the 12fpe UK version.

Yes you are right about the air rifles in GB unless you have the paperwork to own a FAC airgun, which is the same for a regular powder burner. I'll write to FX and see if they say anything on the subject but to date I have never had a letter to FX answered. I don't know if you have to have a big youtube channel or something like that to get them to respond or not, LOL. If I do ask them a legitimate question and don't answer it then I will look to a different air gun. The caliber changing really doesn't mean a whole lot to me since it's almost $500.00 a caliber change. I mean a spare mag is $99.00 not including shipping, but that's from their web site, don't know if anyone sells them cheaper but I pretty sure FX keeps a close eye on who sells their stuff for what. And one other thing please.
Don't start wrangling and getting at each other over this. I don't really want people chewing on each other over this, I am looking for information, not a lot folks getting mad at something someone wrote. I'm not an umpire, just a fat middle (over middle?) aged guy trying to find the air rifle that will make me happy I bought and that I can shoot in different venues of the Field Target world with out owning 3 or 4 air rifles to do it. And right now this one is the strongest possible contender, at least until I talk to Allen anyway and see what he has to say.
I also read somewhere that the ST barrel is like 1 in 96 twist the last inch, which just about the most ridiculous thing I've heard. I can't even thread that on a lathe let alone someone try to button a barrel to that. Also, does anyone have any dimensions on the barrel its self? I've seen the videos and there's a brass insert in the barrel where the transfer port is but I have been wondering how that's installed? Maybe threaded in? Threaded into the barrel I mean or a press fit? That would be easier than a threaded brass insert. It's one or the other, I would just like to know if anyone does know. Thanks for all of the replies though, lively discussion and I'm learning from it. Have a good week.
