FWB 300S spring gun. Designed 50 years ago. What a rifle!

The 7.9 gr pellet gives perspective.

Shot this today with iron sights and octogenarian eyes. Just the one group shot.
All you youngsters should have one of these old rifles.
This one made mid 70s has head shot rabbits to 50 yards; and starlings at 70 with pass-throughs.
All the top scorers in your recent USA Benchrest Nationals used these old gems in the springer division.
Magic little gun. ... regards, Yrrah.

G'day,

I finally bought a 300S a couple of months ago - there are several for sale in South Australia including a 300 SU. Very light in handling compared to later 10M rifles like the Anschutz 380 and the SSPs that came later. The 300S is the sort of rifle you can shoot all day long.

I don't think that my eyes [and shooting] are as good as yours though. I do have an FWB 127 which is a delight to shoot also.

Nice Shooting there!

Sadly FWB has never(too my knowledge) has made a left hand version of the 300, by left handed I mean completely, not just a left handed stock.
I can understand why they wouldn't as it would require them to change up their machining and manufacturing process a bit to product a cocking lever and loading gate on the left....but still

Perhaps they will make a underlever version of the 300 someday with an enlarged loading port like HW makes for the 97. Wishfull thinking I suppose....

"davemac18"Hey Harry I have that same rifle fwb124 I inherited from my dad. Is your stock? I would love to get it to shoot groups like that. I never liked the trigger much on it, and now the thing wont fire a pellet. Great shooting love seeing groups like that thanks for posting, I am starting to get the bug for these springers
Dave, the early FWB 124s had piston seals that apparently crumbled with age. My guess is that is the problem. I would encourage you to have it overhauled and a new seal installed and a Jim Maccari new spring kit too also a new breach seal perhaps. The end result will be a revelation.
They are wonderful sporter break barrel rifles highly regarded. Perhaps do a little research; and don't give it away or sell it cheaply. You will not get a better sporter break barrel and they shoot a number of the best pellets well. ... Kind regards, Harry.

"Grin_Reaver"Harry it is always good to see your posts. Great shooting. My 30 year old eyes can not accomplish that!

Could you please suggest for me a springer for hunting that is accurate but also has enough energy to allow some leeway for those long shots when a headshot may not be practical or the critter is tough.

Regards Hassan.

Hassan, I am loathe to ever recommend particular rifles for folks to spend money on. I write what I know to be true of the rifles I have.

So with that in mind I will say that the one rifle I have had that was a super accurate break barrel with power to burn was a Beeman Crow Magnum .20 cal shooting Crosman .20 Premiers or H&N Baracudas. It was one of the very first gas ram piston guns made by Theoben as the Theoben Eliminator. I shot many rabbits to 100 yd and foxes out to 50 yd. The one drawback for some folk was that it was quite hard to cock and after three years of constant shooting my right shoulder girdle became inflamed and sore. I was then into my 60s though.
The shoulder recovered and is fine. I traded it for my wonderful RWS excalibre PCP. So if I were younger again and wanted a super accurate break barrel that is the rifle I would seek to buy from someone who was selling a well looked after Beeman Crow Magnum / Theoben Eliminator Mk 1V.
However there are plenty of other folk here who should be able to give first hand information. The HW line are highly regarded too. The HW 95 is highly regarded in.177 as a light hunter and is very well priced in USA. Though heavy, the HW 97 is a beautiful rifle.... Best wishes , Harry.

"NTSOG"G'day Harry,

When you shot rabbits with your FWB 300 what sights were you using? I have shot sparrows at about 25 yards with my FWB 600 and dioptre sights, but hitting such a small target as a rabbit's head at 50 yards is another matter. I have shot rabbits at 40 paces with a bow, but those were body hits and lucky shots.

Jim
The rabbits and starlings were shot with a Leupold 3-9 EFR scope. I have only recently put the factory aperture ring sights back on for 10 m target work.

But yesterday I shot this target with the ring sights at my rimfire target club outdoor range to demonstrate to some other old shooters that not only would the pellets reach the target at 50 m but would group well too from the FWB 300S! The target is the International /Olympic smallbore prone taget.

I had done my trajectory-drop homework from Chairgun and found that with an 8 yd sight zero the drop would be 7 1/2" at 55 yards which was my measurement between the two targets' centres one above the other.
So after sighting in at 8 yards my aim was to centre the higher bull in the aperture sights for a poi on the lower one as you see it in the pic. The old rf shooters were suitably impressed with the quiet old 300S. These were the only five shots put down range.
The rifle is shooting 7.9 fpe with 7.9 gr JSB Express pellet 670 fps with a Maccari spring kit.

But no Jim, I don't shoot pest with the peep sights.
Best regards, Harry.

THanks for the advice Harry took it to a tuner today and it turns out it is a rare collectors item as it is one of the ones with irregular serial number or something of the sort it has a lnc instead of a inc. thought you might get a chuckle out of that.

Yrrah, yes, I remember seeing about 7 years ago a really old airgun article talking about the state of airguns and power. The author of the article was kind of upset on how airgunning in the USA has turned into a race for more power. He indicated of how the shift from .177 to other cals has changed the perspective for the worst.

So the author then went to show examples of him hunting with the FWB 300s. He posted many old old photos of him taking out tree rats, rabbits at long distances. He showed much of the the same information on as above. Clean pass throughs of of rabbits an squirrels at 25 and 40 yards. I wish I could find the article it debunks alot of the misinformation going on with todays airguning. Basically the push for .25 and above is pushing new sales and hardware.

I know from experience 12 FPE will do a clean pass through on most squirrels and rabbits at 35 yards and beyond. With 20FPE at 100 yards the .177 will penetrate 8 inches of ballistic gel. The .177 penetrates very well.

I shoot .177 as my primary cals. I tend to favor it because of shot count. The .25 hits harder but who cares if it gets the job done.

Dear Harry,

One of my friends had fwb 300s. A couple of years ago it came to me for replacing the seal.

it was the first time I disassembled the complete gun.

Its German master piece of engineering.

A great recoil less system. Two springs in opposite direction.

metal O rings.

The best trigger I ever used.

Accuracy is remarkable.

What a gun.
