Joe if you get one with a really bad looking stock just paint it the same way you paint a car. A lot of the rimfire boys do that. Look on rimfirecentral sometime.

Look what I found up under about 37 years of build up and varnish ...It's a 1979 Universal ...How bout that !!!

What an awesome thread! My recreational springers have always been couple of HW30s / R7 with some modifications of course. Now I got just two, one is 5 or 6 yo HW30s and the other one is just restored HW30 m/II, which was a gift from my father (about 25 years ago). But now I think I need FWB300 in my airgun cabinet

Regarding this one above. The dark chocolate browny w. two lil legs.
How do you know what grain is in the wood underneath all that lacquer? Do you look up the guns' specs and find out what the manufacturer used or is it a year thing... 1977 = Oak , 1980 = Beech etc,
I love the finish on these guns you post. The wood makes them something like prize furniture. I have forgotten how much I enjoyed all this some years back but I can't pursue all my passions or I'd be 300 by the time I'd gotten round 'em all.
I'm going to take my lil 1377 projects down some and get some bullsblood beeswax in their woods for the same sheen. Wax I love. Varnish I can do without.
Also, when you sand down those barrels..... they're pure steel, right? So, on the slightest mist, fog or water, is that going to rust? Do you oil it? Or wax it?

Lol ya gotta look HARD No honestly when I see light and dark areas that is almost always gonna be some type of figure in the wood ...( Plus Jim E said it was ) but it's usually what I go by . No it's the Mini version that is Beech ..I believe all the rest are walnut ...But it's not as firm a rule as you might think as some of these don't have the stocks they came with. On the steel Yes I sand down with sandpaper then I Blue them . Aaron. ( AJShoots) helped me along with Jonnes with tips that really made the difference . Those guys have been a huge help along with many others here !!! Jim Edmondson is the AUTHORITY on these guns on this side of the world . And he lays his hands on some really beautiful ones . And he hollers at me when I'm lucky enough to get one from him to rebuild . The guys who were buying wood blanks for FWB back then had a very good eye for nice wood

About as often as I shop for binoculars....Lol sorry Robert couldn't resist ...I've only restored one and it was for a guy ...I never bought one and restored it . They are kinda rare and prices run high

No my shooting friends, no competition I'm just sharing ideas and info...Joe Rhea is doing us all a service by sharing his techniques, discoveries and finished projects...if we weren't fascinated with these 300s we wouldn't be following Joe's thread.
Like many who "discover" these ancient sleeper jewels...I instantly started selling my airgun collection cuz I knew I was done fighting,magnums, artillary holds and wandering POIs, broken scopes,barrel droop...pumps, tanks, fittings...(I still have an fx pcp)
I love these self contained tack drivers...and as the pictures show I can butcher them to suit my tastes.
