Field Target Shooting Harness

I've never seen that image of it on someone, but I find it interesting b/c that's what I finally found to be the most stable position from mine. When new to Open around 4 years ago I looked around and saw most guys with the thickest padded section down in the lumbar area of their backs. I struggled and struggled to make that work and it just wasn't comfortable or stable.

Finally on a frustrated whim I started making drastic changes to the adjustments, thinking I'd go from one extreme to the other and find something that worked gosh dangit! I ended up with it high across the kinda mid thoracic region like in the image you shared.
Can't promise itll work there for you too, since we're all built a bit different, but for me, that's the sweet spot.

These things get made fun of but once you get it adjusted right and spend some time shooting from it, wowza, THEY ARE STABLE!!!

Once you get it adjusted correctly and you're sitting in it holding your gun, just relax every muscle and see
If you can keep the crosshairs where you want them without any muscle activation. If you can, you've hit pay dirt. With my physiology, contracting muscles are twitching muscles......not conducive to accuracy.

Spread your feet wide as you can too, to make as Iarge of a triangle as possible with the three points being each foot and your butt. Lots of guys end up with their ankle together or I've even seen some guys even cross their ankles. For me, when the feet are together it makes the whole setup tipsy, and then I'm back to contracting muscles to hold myself up.

With my primary field target gun, as well as the majority of other ft legal guns that I've shot, I can get better accuracy from my Open (harness) position than I can from a bench.

Sorry, didn't mean to get preachy, just excited to see somebody willing to give the harness a try and wanted to share what has and hasn't worked for me.

Let us know what you think of shooting from it.

Found a photo from front and rear on old match reports, to give you another visual. I set that strap between the knees REAAALLLLY wide compared to most others I've seen using the harness.

Also, can be done without one, but the whole thing works much better with a pretty high knee riser.

First photo was founders cup in 2019. Mark K, Steve M, and myself all shot 47/48 during the match. Me and Mark in Open and Steve in Unlimited. Founders Cup goes to high overall score so we had a three way shoot off, me and Mark in the shoot-off in this photo. Got my name on the traveling cup that year.

Second was AZ State match in 2020. Was just a one day match that year (COVID) and Lauren and I were tied for high overall scores, me a 58/60 in Open and her a 58/60 in WFTF.

5 or 6 clean scores in monthly matches also, all shot from that same position, using the weebly wobbly harness.

Good memories as I hunted own photos of me in the shooting harness.

(just noticed that I somehow had the same shirt on in both years, 13 months apart. I promise I own more than 1 tshirt).

So sorry, I didn't realize you'd brought back a 5 year old thread. I thought Tim had maybe gotten some in and that's what got this conversation going. I've been awake for about 28hrs and not thinking very clearly but I now see you commented on an old thread with hopes of finding a source of a harness.

Again, my apologies.

If somebody gets ambitious and wants to try to make themselves one, I'd be willing to share measurements/details off mine.

Also, I'll try to remember to ask our ft club president at the AZ state match this weekend if the lady I bought mine from is still making them. I remember being put into contact with her 4 or so years ago by somebody in the leadership of our club but the details elude right now. I remember mailing her a check though, no website or anything like that. And a few weeks later she mailed me the harness. She may have been the spouse of a ft shooter that used to come in the past....? I'll see if somebody at the match knows who I'm talking about. If that bears fruit, I'll share the details here on AGN.

I'll be putting mine up for sale on the classifieds in early Nov. when the season is over. Look there at that time if you're in the market for one.
Yeah Keith, you don't fall over because you're six foot, one thousand and you can splay those long legs out for stability. ;) Us short folks don't have that wide of a stance. I know what Scott is sayig about the webble effect. But, it's definitely managable. It never felt like it effected my shot.

Any chance that harness is still available? Have been hoping for another post or classified listing. Thanks
