Extreme Long Range Shooting with Airguns? Get the ColdShot Base!

I have gotten a TON of questions about this - so thought I would make a video.... If you want to get into long range airgunning - you NEED to get a Heritage Arms Cold Shot Adjustable Base! There is nothing like the satisfaction of hitting a target with an airgun beyond 200 yards. Hitting a golf ball at 600 yards was awesome and then hitting a 20 inch metal target at 1250 yards was the shot of my life. If you have been shooting air guns for any amount of time you know that our projectiles drop rapidly after 50 yards and exponentially more as you go further out. So having this adjustable base will allow you to extend the length of shots you can take and maximize the clarity of your optics. I explain in more detail in this video. Visit Heritage Arms and check out their MOAB and MRAB base:

This base is super cool!!

But have you ever seen this? Or have anyone here used it? If I ever shot ELR I think I would get this. https://iveyshooting.com/#product

It LOOKS amazing and it was tested to be DOB accurate at every MOA!!

50 MOA was like 49.997, 100 MOA was like 99.98, 150 MOA was like 148.75 - I mean that is just precision!!!

Chris, you are killing me man. Thanks to you had to have a .257. Down the rabbit hole for $1200 now. You know i gotta have one. Nice video. Arsenal 257420 72g @ 1025 reg pressure 2950 .smoking 1" spinners @ 85 yds way to easy. This beast headed to farm.

For those of you who want to do some punkin' chunkin' like me sometimes...you don't need a Cold Shot base (or similar) to extend out to 400/500 yards. While cool, it's an expensive item at $400-$500 to lob lead downrange.

I own a .308 Texan which with few exceptions is about as good at lobbing bullets downrange as you can get. I found that at that range there aren't any real groupings to speak of as all of the variables that affect airguns take over, and just hitting a 12x12 steel is an achievement. I use the FX No Limit rings and that gets the job done very well for me at a pittance of the cost. When I'm done impressing my friends and playing, or the wind blows more than 5 mph, I just lower the rings back to normal, fire a test or two to make sure I'm back at my normal zero, and everything is good.

I'm not dissing the Cold Shot base, but it's not needed to shoot a Texan long range. Can it adjust better? Absolutely. But is it needed? Not for 500 yards and under. I looked into it years ago and I realized the groups weren't consistent enough at that range to warrant the cost. However, if you want to fire dozens of shots and walk in one to hit the target for a video, then by all means the Cold Shot does it's job.

To each their own...both in performance and budget. But don't think that's the only way to have fun at distances. We've all drank the Koolaid at one time or another (I bought a JSAR Raptor...'nuff said) with airguns and one needs to look deeper at who sponsors what, who gets free stuff to use and then write reviews, etc.

@steelhead707: 100% agree that there are many ways to skin a cat, no offense to the cat lovers. I was also looking at it and at 500 bucks and on top of “needing” a 2000 dollar scope then might as well go a different direction. Like you I find it hard to justify the cost plus additional tolerance issues. However I don’t see anything wrong with walking a shot over at that distance, even that’s not easy.

I’m just happy that we have options whether it’s adjustable ring, mounts or all the way to Charlie TERAC and March genesis, more options the better…..granted I don’t want to eat top roman for 3 years straight to get the nicer options.

The beauty in the Texan is that it's such a versatile platform for distance and hunting; especially the .308 and .257. There's guys that shoot at 1000 yard steel and guys who never go past 75 yards to harvest game. I've bought the suppressors, a bunch of different bullet molds, stock, springs, more molds, scopes both simple and tactical, ffp and sfp, harmonic dampeners...the list goes on and on. Some add-ons and accessories had instant payoffs (usually the cheap ones, ironically) and others not so much.

I actually took the Hawke Sidewinder off of my .308 and put the old Hawke Vantage (purchased 5 years ago as a combo) back on. It's not as busy for hunting and the simple dots are easy to reconcile for yardages out to 200. I just leave it on 5x and I'm happy. However, the previously mentioned scope was and is much better for the bench. I took the gun about as far as I'm able off of the bench so now I'm back to hunting mode 99% of the time.

The .308 will give you about 4-5 high power shots. The 150 gr, NOE BBT is a good shooter for both accuracy and for big game. Check your local laws for the specifics on caliber and/or fpe for deer. Also much more economical to shoot vs. the .45....under half the cost. I realized this when I bought a .50 Texan and paid for ammo until my casting molds arrived. Holy frijoles! The .308 is like shooting JSB's compared to the .50. If you shoot a lot and cost is a factor to you, consider it when you make your purchase.

I think one of the biggest advantages of the cold shot base is for all digital night vision including high end thermal scopes. All the digital and thermal scopes work great but there biggest flaw is no way to adjust your moa mil vertical or adjustment for elevation. Most have second focal plane recticles and trying to hold off on hash marks at night is not for me. Either way a cold shot adjustable base and a newer digital scope I believe is a perfect marriage. I know atn has auxiliary ballistics but it is limited in its internal adjustment s. The cold shot with a good digital night vision like the sight mark pulsar pard ECT I believe are future for many of us.

As far as the cost of the coldshot yes it is expensive. But it is a custom American made machined marvel. The cold shot mechanical base isn't going to wear out like the internals on normal scopes. You pay over $300 for a cheap scope that chances are won't have warranty support in ten years and don't bat a eye. I wore the internals tracking on nightforce Leupold they the best $1000.00 plus. So long story short in the long run there is no cheap way to long term dial elevation into your scope. Buy once cry once. Im very happy with my cold shot mil version its held up to over 500 rounds from.my 50 Texan that chews up cheap air gun dovetail mounting accessories.

i have used cold shots for some time they are precise adjustable bases I have used both MOA and MI versions , Now The word extreme to me means very far so The coldshot or things like this will only get you out so far unless you raise scope many inches above barrel as the extreme angle will be obstructed by moderator or silencers or barrels weather on a 50 BMG or a pcp air gun ,

If you want to take it to next level and dont want such an extreme angle of scope to barrel , The Charlie HQ is by far the next level meaning you have scope straight and the Charlie HQ is a periscope tyoe unit designed for extreme ranges beyone 5000 yards and it is repeatable , the unit is solid and not cheaply made it is also able to use in any conditions and can be cleaned with water and soap , Here is what it is , now it can be mounted to your scope with a magnetic connection or adapters and unit is ordered for what ever scope you use ,

Example 5-45 Schmidt bender PM2 , or nightforce 7-x35 or Kahles ect , here it is , like I said coldshot is great but it has many limitations for Extreme Range

The HQ can be bought in mils or moa and has 0 to 250 mils or 0 to 890MOA

....designed for extreme ranges beyone 5000 yards and it is repeatable....

I'd be happy to be out to 1200 yards with a Texan .457...LOL

Pretty sure that's beyond reasonable airgun range. Pretty sure that's beyond .338 Lapua, .408 CheyTac, McMillan Tac-50, Barrett M82, and the world's longest rifle shot ever recorded in competition (GA Precision Custom). Basically, I think you're talking about artillery.

Have you seen the march long range scope that has the mechanical base built into the scope.300 moa I'm pretty sure 5-50 power maybe. Mark and Sam YouTube channel has been testing them . They look really cool. He doesn't like using the cold shot bases for his Elr work either he used earlier versions and had to make a few improvements to use for his elr work. Night force wedge prism isn't that expensive I think it a 100 moa if I remember right.
