High Explosive Anti Tank. Modern explosive compounds lend themselves to being molded in a conical shape within the warhead of a missile or artillery shell. This cone, in turn, can concentrate the explosive plasma that is developed in the few micro-seconds after the initial detonation of the explosive compound, directing that plasma as a jet or concentrated stream of energy suited to piercing far more armor or other material than would just the kinetic energy of a solid warhead. Even the energy of a comparable amount of explosive compound, if not "shaped" for optimal effectiveness, will not penetrate nearly as much armor as the shaped version of the same explosive.
