daytime possum graphic

Still trying to figure out why people feel the need to kill opossums if they aren't going to eat them. It's is FACT that they are the least diseased of th wild mammals in the US (their body temp isn't typically higher enough for them to carry rabies for instance), they typically don't chew their way into structures (like squirrels or other rodents), they are no threat to dogs or cats (they look mean with their pointy teeth and hissing, but are no match for even small dogs attacking them) and they kill and eat snakes and ticks (in the instance of ticks, they eat thousands per year). Don't get me wrong, I need only the smallest of excuses to justify shooting an animal and an even smaller excuse to leave them right where they fall. But for the life of me, I can't bring myself to shoot a Virginia opossum.

"artyparty01"you've opened my eyes to something, after your post re possums eating ticsks read up on them. now i no longer shoot them, but use a hav a heart trap, once trapped i then transport them to my favorite hunting permission, release them so they can help prevent me from getting bitten by a lyme disease carrying tick. Thanks again.
I stayed my trigger finger from them for a time, but I kept finding their poop all over the feeder zone, and I also like them breeding under the deck. I don't wake up just to shoot them any more either though. I do like how they clean up the sparrow carcasses though...

By the way, they are good eating, if you can stand the smell when you're preparing them, or the fact that that crap for several minutes after their death roll.
