Chipmunk Smackdown #2

Hello fellow Airheads!
grin.gif
I offer for your viewing pleasure, another Chipmunk smackdown. As I have said in past videos, here in the Northeast we certainly do not have a shortage of these little chippers everywhere and here at Camp Hajimoto, this little bastages are causing a lot of property damage and need to be managed. Please know that your feedback and commentary are my payment, please be generous. If you have any questions, please feel free to post them below.

Thank you!

"Alan"It appears the remains were in full rigor when you picked them up? Just curious.
Yes, because there are so many chippys, if I recover while they are active the will run and burrow up and I miss the shot opportunies. They will be there sometimes for 5 hours before i can get to them. Thanks for the comment Alan.

I'm curious about your tune on the Marauder. Have been watching your videos and I am impressed with the performance of your .22 . My first pcp was a Disco that I got about 1 1/2 yrs. ago. I've taken it up and down and all around with mods and now want to step up to a Marauder. The question is, .22 or .25? I love to hunt but shoot 500 shots at inanimate targets to every 1 at live game. Air consumption is a concern as I only have a 92 c.i. CF tank. I'm an old fart and don't have much disposable income so a .22 is attractive but what did you do to get the performance you get? Can you get decent results at P Dog range?

Hey Bruce!
First, let me say that I really do appreciate when folks spend their time to not only watch my videos but to write to me, thank you sir.
Now onto answering your questions. 22 vs 25 - My opinion

.22 Pros
  1. Cheaper ammo.
  2. A more economical plinking caliber.
  3. Ammo readily available on the shelf at stores like Walmart.
  4. Flatter ballistic curve.
  5. More shots per fill.
.22 Cons
    1. Smaller projectile more affected by the wind over long range.
    2. Not a good choice for anything larger than Red or Grey Fox.
    3. Less forgiving if not a well placed shot due to a lower FPE delivery.
.25 Pros
      1. High energy on target.
      2. Less affected by the wind in long range scenarios.
      3. Very forgiving with a less than perfect shot due to higher FPE delivery.
      4. Allows for much wider game choices (larger quarry).
.25 Cons
        1. Ammo more expensive.
        2. Not as economical for plinking.
        3. Ammo not readily available at retail stores like Walmart.
        4. Lower shot per fill typically.
        5. Exceeds some States maximum caliber laws for rifle hunting small game.
Air consumption:
All air rifles can be detuned to use less air and still allow you to enjoy them for more shots. The .22 requires less volume of air per shot than the heavier .25. So rather than have your .22 screaming down range @ 1000FPS, you drop the FPS to something like 700 and increase you shot count substantially. Now this rule applies to either the .22 or .25 but if you have a .22 at 700 FPS and a .25 at 700 FPS the .22 will deliver more shots per fill than the .25.

How much to get a .22 to perform like mine:
Because you stated that you are thinking of a Marauder, I will not point out other air rifles in the same or less dollar amount and focus on what it takes to make a .22 MRod consistent. The most important thing for an MRod to begin down the road of consistency is a hammer debounce device. More air is wasted per shot by hammer bounce than you can imagine. Hammer bounce is caused by the hammer striking the air valve pin and because there is not any dampening on the hammer it repeatedly strikes the air valve pin wasting air. The cost for a good Hammer debounce device like a WAR TSS (Wicked Air Rifles Twin Spring System) would be $70-$80. Next would be an air regulator. The air regulator delivers air at a user defined maximum pressure to the projectile every shot. Note I said maximum pressure, you can adjust your hammer spring to deliver less if you want but the rifles main air valve will only see the maximum pressure set by the regulator. You can purchase air regulators from $120 to $190. They do require the air pressure cylinder to be completely evacuated and some regulators require the pressure gauge block to be removed. Regulator installations are not as easy as the hammer debounce device but can be achieved by the average guy no problem, providing proper instructions are followed. On a mechanical difficulty scale, a HDD is a 3 out of 10 to install and a Regulator would be a 6 out of 10 IMHO.

          PDog Range Results:
My Marauder will deliver pellets exactly where I want and any shooter worth is salt will tell you that power that can not be predicted is not worth having. If you can put the pellet in the eye or within 1/8" broadside, you will put down a PD. The issue is, most PD don't let you get within 50 yards before then dip in the burrow but properly tuned .22 can reach out to 100yards and be very effective. another consideration is wind, the .22 will be pushed around more than the .25 would and when the .25 get there it will be carrying far more kinetic energy which equals better PD dirt nap time.

I hope the information I have shared is helpful to you. In my opinion, the .22 offers more versatility and economical operation costs than the .25. If you bought a .22 and a hammer debounce device, I think you'd will be a happy camper.

          Good luck!

Haji-
thanks for response. I have installed an FFH in my Disco and was very pleased with it's performance. I'm able to get 30 shots with ES of 17, avg 20 fpe. It works well out to at least 55 - 60 yds. Great for rabbit, doves, magpies, pigeons and other pests. Can't forget rats! But I'm wanting a little more than what I have now, like a repeater! I put over 17,000 rds. thru that Disco, hand loading 1 pellet at a time. The regulator and hammer device are a must. My first concern is accuracy. Power can be adjusted up or down, but as you said, a miss by 3 inches is still a miss with 15 or 100 Fpe. I have been aware of the debate about .22 Marauder barrels and wonder if it really is that much of a crap shoot these days. If I had to pay an extra $150 or more to get an accurate barrel, I think I would rather get the .25 to start with as it seems to be pretty consistently accurate out of box. Could just tune it down to about 35 fpe. What do you think?

This is the first I watched your videos. I appreciate the time you take for the details. I have been looking for a prism to make my own scope mount and couldn't find it until you came along. ( I was using the wrong words in my search) Amazon didn't have anymore and someone else had them for 69.00. I looked on e-bay and there they were for 24.95. I have some carbon fiber around and will make a mount out of that. If it comes out nice I will send you a picture.
Thanks again and great video.

P.S. My first PCP was a 1st gen 25 mrod. it shot really well so I never touched anything on it. dropped 22 out of 25 starlings one day at 35-50 yrds.

Thanks for the kind words and I look forward to your custom camera mount. I am so glad you were able to find an angle sight to harvest the prism from.

"intenseaty22"Haji, on another note: Your MRod. I don't recall if you ever said, but, is it a stock barrel? Or have you upgraded the barrel? My impression was that the 2nd Gen's .22 barrel was not up to par. Is this the case? (I think your's is a 2nd Gen, no?
I have a generation 2 Marauder and it is the original barrel.

"Bobr"What kind of grabers are you useing ? And nice shooting like your scope cam
The grabbers are the cheapy Harbor Freight pick up tool for $2.49.

Haji (and anyone interested) I just found an awesome deal on these pick up sticks. Found this at Costco, $10 for a two pack. The one from Harbor Freight served well, until it broke, frankly pretty cheaply build. These look much more substantial.
