Bizill's Taipan Veteran (Pic HEAVY! Don't quote first post)

This thread is a work in progress but for now, a chitty video of my nerdy ass...

//www.youtube.com/embed/[url=

I have yet to mount my scope and what not so I'll be updating this thread whenever the heck I feel like it. I don't have too much to say just yet as it's new to me. Quality seems very nice, though the finish isn't top notch, but still nice. I suppose it depends on what one considers top notch. Regardless, it's nice enough. The cocking lever is smooth and I was pulling on it harder than was necessary, not knowing it would be so fluid. Thank God for this thing called leverage. I like it better than cocking a bolt. Still wish the side lever was further up near the trigger vs in the rear, but I knew what I was getting into. You see, I had my eyes set on the Vulcan, so I made a compromise. I'm thinking that will be one of the only compromises, though.

I love that it's got the 20moa rail built in. That way I can just use regular scope mounts and not expensive ones with adjustable moa drop. I've seen many, to include FX Impact that have fugly lookin' machined picatinny rails but this Veteran has nice machining. No worries there.

BRB. Stupid ass Windows is forcing a shutdown and restart on me....damn it! K, I'm back, that was quick. Thank God for SSD's. They make for quick boot times on the 'ole laptop.

Anyway, the stock isn't terrible, though now I'm thinking the black completely conceals the woodgrain. I pretty much knew that going in but damn it to hell, if I don't have to have my black guns. The shaping and working of the stock are nicely done. Even and not lop-sided or anything. I really didn't know what to expect there. So I'm happy. I will however need to mount a small picatinny rail to the fore guard. That'll make working on it so much easier since I don't have a gun vice.

Before I get onto more points I would like to quickly add that I attached my Donny Du Sumo for a quickie shot to test it and by God, I thought my Benjamin P-rod with Rocker1's LDC was quiet in .22. This Veteran .25 is quieter IMHO stock but with the Sumo is that much more quiet! I really didn't know what to expect as I thought the Prod was pretty damned quiet. With much more power on tap, AND to be more quiet...well, I'm tickled pink. :4:

Of course the Taipan LDC 1/2-20 adapter from TalonTunes to be able to mount the Sumo...

Being a right-handed shooter I do believe I'll be mounting the cocking lever to the left side of the gun. I don't like it at all on the right. I'll be watching Ernest's video on that soon. I'll be mounting my scope as well. Then time permitting I'll try some shot strings on the Chrony but not sure when I'll have time for that.

That Sumo is a sexy SOB. It really is made with quality. PROFESSIONAL craftsmanship. All cnc quality there. It is light, being that it's for AIRGUN USE ONLY. But the finish and quality truly is remarkable. No lip service there. And like I said, it's functional as I took that single test shot before the sun went down and HOT DAMN if this Veteran isn't quiet! Did I mention it's quiet? If not, allow me to reiterate...it's quiet!

Looks great and I bet it shoots great also! I just got a sumo as well and you are right it is a high quality ldc, effective too. Swapping the sidelever is easy and quick I had to swap mine as I'm a lefty. I think you might find it a little awkward to use on the left side though since you are right handed. If the lever was set more forward it would work but for me there was no way I could have kept it on the right side and used it comfortably. Of course YMMV.

I thought overnight I had a leak but there exists no leak. It's temperature change. I pumped it up to 255 bar last night, checked it this morn when cold and read 245 bar (no parallax error in my eyeball readings) and when it warmed back up in the house it was back up to 255. Perhaps you think I'm smoking crack, but let me assure you, I am not. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I tried doing a video of the Sumo with and without it on the Taipan but the app was so tremendously slow that things didn't register properly. I'd say that ANY test out there using a phone app is not accurate in the least. What I can tell you though is that there is a "crack" sound in stock form. Not loud, but it's there. The Sumo takes care of that "crack", and no, not a supersonic crack, just an air turbulence crack of some sort. The Sumo tames all. No I did not get a free Sumo out of this but I wouldn't complain if one were tossed my way!

Stock weights approximately 27 ounces.

Time to mount my Magpul 5 slot Picatinny rail to the hand guard. Only 2 bolts hold the stock onto the airgun.

On my particular stock there is about 21mm thickness of wood from the bottom of the hand guard to the inside. There was no way to use the screws and keymod nuts or whatever they're called so I grabbed some m6 machine screws and drilled my holes from the outside so I wouldn't rip the edges of the holes. Then I flipped the stock in my drill press and used a forstner bit small/large enough to accommodate the nutdriver I used to tighten the nut on the inside. Those holes I drilled about halfway deep, around 11mm so that the nut had enough thread to be secure.

Did some quickie chrony. I started off at 230 bar and after 50 usable shots @ 38ft-lb energy with 25.39 grain JSB's, I end up at 145 bar. I may have to up the power or keep it here for shot count. Not sure yet. Have yet to stretch out her legs as I only had 20 yards to play with. Hole-in-hole, obviously at this close range. Weak, I know but I have no land and today was just getting things set up.

Tony @ TalonTunes had the fps at 956 on his chrony printout so his is off or perhaps mine. Caldwell chrony here.

"Deja"im sorry but those guns look like **** :\

the finish has a lot to desire

MOD EDIT: PLEASE REFRAIN FROM PROFANITY
Why would you say that about someone's new purchase.

Speaking of finish, the intricate detail to which the Taipans have been machined fitted and finished is on a different level.

Okay, carry on the trolling.....

I am waiting for a good shot at a squirrel that's been causing problems in my yard and porch but keep missing my opportunity. But in preparation for the shot I've gotten to fondle the unit a lot. I gotta say, I love the feel of the hand grip and the stock does not interfere at all with cheek weld. My first bullpuppy so I'll still have to get used to not having a proper cheekpiece but it's nowhere near as bad as I thought it could be. Anyway, yes, it's heavy-er the way I have it decked out and I'm not sure yet if I'll ever attempt to use a sling with it. I'd have to fabricate a way to do so as with most bullpups.

I think part of why I love it are the silence, with and without the Sumo, but obviously best with it, and the decent glass on the scope and yes...that beloved trigger. My Prod I never could shoot as well as I had hoped. But this Veteran...wow. I'm lovin' it. One simply cannot go wrong with this purchase.

I was asked about my Athlon scope so I may as well respond here as well...Glass is clear enough. I haven’t done a box test on it yet. I do love the busy reticle. I have an SWFA HD 5-20×50 with amazing glass and I still enjoy looking through the glass of the Athlon. The turrets have hardly any tactile or audible feedback, aka, mushy. They don’t line up on every mark, but neither does my $1200 SWFA, something about not having the correct amount of splines. Maybe SWFA had it corrected in Japan, I bought mine like 10 years ago.I had a Centerpoint cheapie 4-16×50 on my prod and didn’t care for it and put a true holographic sight on it instead. Looking through the Athlon with my Veteran .25…feels right. So I hope that when I do a box test, things come out well. LIfetime warranty that they honor, but lots of honoring has been done so that scares me some. I get a good amount of chromatic abberation at full zoom and probably alot lower. I’ve had the thing sitting in my closet for months until I finally got something to put her on. The sunshade was extra, but worth it. It’s offered by Midway under the Athlon brand but possibly others have the same thread pattern, not sure.I used better than average rings as I don’t like to lap rings. I used Warne. They are steel, but I like them alot. Harder to mount than horizontal rings, but no biggie. So the short answer, I like my Athlon alot thus far.

"Bizill" The turrets have hardly any tactile or audible feedback, aka, mushy. They don’t line up on every mark, but neither does my $1200 SWFA, something about not having the correct amount of splines.
You might try taking a turret cap off and turning the adjustment and see if you get audible/tactile clicks. If so I believe the fix is to remove the heavy grease inside the cap and replace with something light.

Kidcurrie is correct about the turret click fix. I did the same with my scope. The heavy grease was causing the lack of clicks and mushy feeling. In addition, I would suggest doing the zero-stop modification with a couple of fiber washers (don't use the steel washers that Athlon suggests). It keeps you from getting lost if you are a turret turner, as I am.
