Yea we’re sort of a niche / oddball group, haha. I’ve done big bores for years and have tried so many different brands of bullets and balls. Before I started shooting NSA, the best accuracy with my Texan was with Hornady .457 round ball. BUT there’s a catch with RB’s as you know. They have a very short attention span! RB accuracy goes out the window past 50 yards, but all of the deer I ever killed with them were under 40 yards, so no problem, right?
Im starting to make a short story long, so I’ll get right to it- The NSA 265 to 295 grain hollow points are more accurate than RB’s in my typical kill circle. Beyond 50 yards, is where they REALLY rule. It’s become enjoyable to go long and bench shoot the Texan, which I never thought I’d say. So one bullet for every purpose. I don’t shoot them because they’re bullets, or because they’re hollow point, they just deliver the best accuracy at every distance I’ll ever shoot. The mushrooming is just a bonus I guess. Vital shots are always pass through with bullets or balls. Head shots are pass through about 1/2 the time depending on distance and how much bone is in the way. This bullet (you’re correct, 265gn) was trapped right under the hide on the off side. Had it not mushroomed, there’s no doubt it’d be a pass through.
I think Airforce Airguns owes custom bullet makes a huge debt of gratitude for making their rifle perform to its potential. “Build it and the bullets will come” I guess, haha. I’ve not tried the .45 skirted pellets, but I would assume they’re pretty accurate(?) but will have a MUCH lower BC than a bullet of comparable weight. I know they’ll kill a deer with a clean vitals shot. Seems like they’d be devastating on thin skinned, medium size game. I may get one final doe tag for the late antlerless season this month. Are you done yet?
