BEWARE JSB .25 pellets! There's yet ANOTHER variation to the 25.4's!!!!

Shooters, Inspect your 25.4 pellets as soon as you get them. I just discovered this 3rd variation a few minutes ago.

Look at the difference inside the skirts...

(The little black mark inside them is from the pen I used to push them out.)

Some variation in the waist and head as well...

I ran out of 25gr pellets last year. So, these are all less than a year old. I don't know where I got them from but, it's a pretty good guess that the two deeper pockets came from Pyramid Air.
I discovered the shallower variations back in May.
In my opinion, two variances is too many. But, it's acceptable since I was comparing head sized batches (AoA) vs mixed lots (White label bottoms). Now to find out that there is a 2nd variation to the while labels.... really?

Sirk having different options is great but when they are all labeled with the same name it is not so great. They should not be put in the same tins. I emailed JSB a month ago about a different issue and they responded very quickly. Maybe you should do the same and see what their answer is Tom. Good luck and let us know. I only shoot the king heavies now.

You guys got me thinking.... I just picked up 2 sleeves in August from AoA. So, I grabbed a pellet out of one.
Did I say three variances?
I meant FOUR!

This gets me wound up because we search and search for the right pellet. Once you find it, it gets changed. That, and I got a little OCD issue. lol
Each time they make a change, it changes the balance of the pellet and the thickness of the skirt which effects how the skirt engages the rifling. That's a heck of a lot of change for a company that a majority of us go to for consistency.

Someone mentioned in the other thread - this might be why Ted buys huge loads of pellets at a time. Well, you can add one more name to that list. It hurts buying a whole case at a time but, that'll be the way I do it from now on too.

I don't know if I should sell those 5 tins, practice with them, or send them over the Chrony!

PM me their info.

Wow, that looks like a big difference. Have you weighed them to see if there is any slight variation in weight? The cans are probably all marked the same weight, but that might not be the actual case with each pellet. If they were mine I'd weigh each one using a very fine scale to see what differences in weight each one has. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

I noticed this difference this, ate a late lunch and posted this thread, then went on a response call for the local volunteer fire dept. that took many hours. Tomorrows work for 48 hours. So, things are going to have to be put on hold for a while.
I probably will not be able to answer accuracy questions because someone is interested in buying those 5 tins. Also, I haven't been able to practice for EBR and want to focus on that over the next few weeks.
The white label tins do not have lot numbers on them. 2 of the 4 came from AoA and do have lot numbers but, I'll have to wait until next week to get them off the tins for you.
As far as weighing them. I'd be interested to see if there was a significant difference. But, I do not believe I'll get the chance to find out.

I'm sure these would shoot about the same as any other tin of JSB's would. But, if your rifle has been shooting lot "A" and it's tuned, happy, and performing well for you. Then, you (unknowingly) switch to Lot "X", which you assume is made the same as lot "A", you could experience a loss in accuracy that you can't put your finger on. Then you re-tune your rifle to lot "X" until it's happy again. Enter lot "K" and the whole thing starts over.
This could very well be one of the reasons why your rifle might act weird whenever you give it pellets from a new tin.

There was a mention here on "white" label tins. Are there other color label tins that are higher quality? I started weighing my ammo, to date only 2500. The last tin 105 were 25.0 to 25.2. 41 were over 25.6. 25.3-25.5 were the majority. Out of a 350 count tin? that's about 40%? that don't make muster. I don't complain because other than the heavies? I have two very shoot able groups. I also don't shoot ESB yet. So I get Toms concern.

This is nothing new. Field Target and Bench Rest shooters, mainly using .177 have seen variations in pellet shape since JSB started selling to the public. Most other shooters thought we were crazy for sorting, weighing and inspecting our pellets. Now it would seem those of you using the larger calibers are just starting to figure it out for yourselves. Wait till they can't keep up and start putting more than one die in a tin/batch/lot. That's when things get interesting and whole lots of pellets become useless.

Edit: I had only skimmed the thread. It would seem the .25's have reached critical mass. Good luck getting a tin of just one die in the future, let alone an entire lot. Welcome to the fold boys. Break out your scales, pellet gauges and magnifien glasses. This genie isn't going back in the bottle.
