Backyard springer ratting (graphic)

Yes, your one with tape measure had shorter tail but others seem slender with tails long as body.. Never seen a Norway rat go into tree either. Must be open food source some where those guys are healthy. I like to hunt rats with nitesite equipment on big grain farm silos near me. Think I over harvested my rats. Very few left. Funs over.

Yeah they are very healthy haha, we have a pond and a garden so that combination with the bird feeder really brings them in the backyard. I've never had one in the house but come night time they come lurking. I wish I could shoot all night, but I usually shut down at 10:30 for the sake of my good neighbours.

And great shooting on the rats!

As another nite-site user do you know the trick about focusing the camera lens? It made a huge difference, between focusing that and adjusting the occular piece on the scope it's crystal clear on the monitor.

Most of my backyard shots are around 20-50 feet

The springer I bought could shoot "495 fps" I then upgraded the spring and piston to the FAC type ones. So it shoots the 25.4's around 500 and 14-16 grains around 700, yeah the law has funny wording and it has to be both "over 4.2ft/lbs of energy and over 500fps" so basically of course its going to be over 4.2 but if you can keep it under 500 no matter the caliber no matter the energy its "not a firearm". So i've actually emailed them and asked if I use 43.2 Eun Jin in my Royale on the low setting and keep it below 500 can I use it anywhere? This still makes 23.5ft/lbs!!

I have a great farm I can shoot at, horses, pigs, chickens, ducks and a good wooded area all on 25 acres. But because the municipality has a "no shooting firearms" bylaw I can't use my Royale there!!, So I'm grinding my gears trying to figure a way to use it there legally.

Worth a try, here is the wording regarding air guns in Canada.

1. Air guns that are firearms for purposes of both the Firearms Act and the Criminal CodeThese are air guns with both a high muzzle velocity (greater than 152.4 metres or 500 feet per second) and a high muzzle energy (greater than 5.7 joules or 4.2 foot-pounds). The "muzzle velocity" is the speed of a projectile at the instant it leaves the muzzle of a gun, normally expressed in metres per second or feet per second. The "muzzle energy" is the energy of a projectile at the instant it leaves the muzzle of a gun, expressed in joules or foot-pounds. Air guns need to meet both standards to be classified as firearms for purposes of the Firearms Act.These high-powered air guns are subject to the same licence and registration requirements as a conventional firearm. Owners and users are also required to store, transport, display and handle them safely in accordance with the regulations supporting the Firearms Act.

"crittahitta"So your springer is considered a firearm? Wow. I guess we are lucky here in the USA. I wonder how long until they try and restrict ours. Thanks for the feedback.
Just with light pellets haha. Yeah I know we have crazy firearm laws, but I can still buy a Glock or SKS or Bushmaster so it's not as bad as UK I think.

Well I let the feeder run dry the last month or so, haven't done any backyard action. Grabbed a bag of bird food and filled the feeder yesterday and this morning I saw some formidable rat logs at the base so I sat out for a while tonight, shot this one first with a full pass-through and exited right below the ear. A few minutes later I got another one I thought it was a good hit it was rolling around but I couldn't find it. I guess he ran down his hole to die.

The body is almost as long as the biggest I've gotten, about 8.5 inches of body but a thicker and shorter tail. Really fat.

nice shooting on the Rats, definitely looks like Roof Rats, I get some big ones down here in North San Diego area, we can shoot Raccoons too, but I don't bother with them, Possums are another critter that tends to get into things around here, they especially like to eat all the Peanut butter on the Rat feeder, I don't shoot them unless it's close to trash day, just so they don't stink up the neighborhood..... Night vision is the best way to get Rat's, mine is a DYI setup I made on the 3D printer, works Awesome.....
we don't have power restrictions here so if I wanted to, I could use my Airforce Texan .45, but it would go right through my back stop and my neighbors shed, car, house, not very Backyard friendly......... but just think what it would do to a Rat, I might have to try it at my Buddy's house in Valley Center where I usually shoot it.

Yeah I can't wait till it warms up I'll sit out there for an hour or so at dark and see what comes out. We don't have power restrictions here either just at a certain point it's considered a firearm. (I live right in a city too, if I lived in the country my Royale would be backyard friendly) I can get a Texan here as well but the SS won't make it up here because the suppressor. Thanks, and i'd love to see what a Texan does to a rat lol.
