I'm renting an apartment in L.A. County, Southern California and have access to a backyard where I recently got into growing my own garden. I've noticed squirrels have become pests here and dig up my root systems in order to dig down and burry their nuts, damaging my plants and flowers.
Question: with owner's permission, would I legally be allowed to humanly dispatch these critters with a .177 cal pellet rifle I have?

NOPE, that's California for ya!17.08.360 - Shooting weapons prohibited. A person shall not discharge or shoot any firearms, air gun, slingshot or bow and arrow.(Ord. 9752 Art. 3 § 20, 1969.) This is off the LA Sherrif site.

That's pretty much the same in any city or town limits in California :-( .

Unfortunately that is the case, it is forbidden. However, so is driving faster than 90 mph on I-5 at 3:00 in the morning but I still do it. You have to make a personal decision as to whether its worth the potential repercussions if you get caught. I would probably abstain depending on how bad the problem is, especially because apartments are so close together and it would prob be pretty risky.
