A shooting game we played in the police department that you guys might like

Hi guys, I'm new here so I don't know the general attitudes about things yet, but it seems you guys are open to most ideas, from my reading. Here's a game that I actually came up with while serving as a police officer. After the Air Force I wanted to fly drug interdiction for US Customs, but there was a great deal of competition. They really preferred guys with a law enforcement background as well as a flying background. I decided to attend the academy in San Antonio and see what happened. I ended up serving as a police officer for 9 years, even while flying for Continental- I never did work for Customs...go figure. Life.
Anyway, I eventually ended up on a DEA sponsored multijurisdictional SWAT team, an element leader, armorer and firearms instructor on a narcotics entry team. SWAT trains constantly, and perhaps LAPD or NYPD gets callouts every day, but here we averaged 3 per month or so. It was challenging to keep the guys motivated so they did not get complacent or lazy.

I created a shooting game called "You Suck". You can use whatever name you like, this one was appropriate for the time and place, lol.

It is played much like "Horse" in basketball. Shooter #1 calls a shot and takes it. "Left ear" for instance. If he misses, it is shooter #2's turn. If he makes it, all of the other shooters have to copy his shot on their own targets. If they miss, they get a "Y".

Shooter #1 maintains control until he misses his called shot- then he loses it to the next guy. You only get a letter if you are replying to the controlling shooter's shot- i.e. if you are "serving" you just lose the serve if you miss, you don't get a letter.

Play continues in this fashion, every miss earns the misser (misser?) a letter- first miss is a Y, second miss is a O, third a U, etc. Control over the shot rotates based on whether the first shooter makes his called shot or not. If he calls the shot and misses he loses the "serve" to the next guy, so he is sort of in a bind...call a hard shot and miss, he is no longer in control...call an easy shot and everybody hits it, he loses the serve as well. So if he calls "head", and everyone hits the head, the 2nd shooter now "serves" the shot for everyone to duplicate.

Of course, if you spell out "You Suck", you are out.

Is this clear? I hope so...it is a fun game that can be played at close range with handguns or MP5's or at 1000 yards with .50 BMG's. It really stimulates competition and gets people trying to improve their shooting skills. Our SWAT commander gave me a training award for coming up with this, due to the obvious improvement in both skills and morale- that and $5 will get me a cup of coffee, but it was a nice gesture.

I hope y'all try it and enjoy it! As always, be safe!

Cheers!

Thanks everyone! I'm rather proud of having created the game, you can probably tell :) My kids...well, they're grown now, but they are all amazing shots, and I credit it completely to them spending hours and hours on our range together and with friends, playing "You Suck!" (Kids and cops love that name, go figure!) They played the game with everything from pellet guns to .22.s to 45-70's to M4's. Heck, I've seen them play it with balls of paper and a trash can!

Anyway, thanks for the kind words and enjoy the game! (Whatever you choose to call it)
