2016 TENNESEE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
With the original Invicta range destroyed by loggers, it looked like the 2016 TN State Championships weren't going to happen, but Roz Sumpter rose to the occasion, not only letting it be shot at Roz's Hollow, but he changed over targets, added a lane and somehow managed to get some evil wind to blow as well! A crisp autumn morning greeted twenty one shooters to the Tennessee State Championships – the sneeky wind showed up shortly after the shooters meeting and it took most of us a while to figure out what to do with the ever changing gusts in terms of aiming off, some with better results than others.
We had a bunch of great guys come to shoot from Airgunning Atlanta, including 2015 AAFTA National Champion Ken Hughes, as well as four time TN State Champion Doug Vinson – Tyler Patner drove down from Ohio to come out to play with us, he picked up Harold Rushton on the way down, along with Harold's lovely wife and daughter, as it was Harold's birthday this weekend. To complicate matters for Harold he had a procedure done to his left eye a few days earlier and the meds he was on were not helping him at all.
Although it warmed up enough that we could almost have total feeling in our fingers, the aforementioned wind showed and messed with all the scores, well not quite everyone’s, as Doug was on form, I think this time of year agrees with him, as he managed to miss only four shots!!!
Yes, Doug Vinson is the Tennessee State Champion for the FIFTH time in a row! Awesome shooting, considering Roz altered to course to make some shots quite wicked.
There were no shoot-off's, Roz had made three tie breaker lanes, and good job too, as we had to go down to the third tie breaker to establish second and third place in world Class!
After the match we had the awards ceremony, Mike Koratich added a little twist to the ceremony, he has been busy compiling all the scores from the year from the four local clubs, Airgunning Atlanta, Invicta, Good Ol Boys and Mount Cheaha's regular matches, and made a spread sheet, to create the “Southern Handicap” which awards the shooters who improves the most, I am sure he can explain it much better than me, hopefully he chimes in at some point to do so. He also supplied the awards for the top three, many thanks Mike! A big thanks to Brad Troyer who not only designed the rest of the awards once again, but also for shooting an awesome 56 with a 12 ft lb piston gun!
Awards were followed by Harold blowing out the candles on his cake and a round of “Happy Birthday”, then we drove over to the local barbecue place, Hickory House, were we ate way too much, well I did anyway!
That is it for our scheduled matches done for the year, if nice weather happens there may be an impromptu match sometime between here and the 2017 season, thanks for everyone that came out and had fun this year!
