Umarex Gauntlet 22: Status update performance report

I finally had an opportunity to get outside and push some lead down range at Camp Hajimoto. The temperature was a balmy 46°F wind out of the WSW @ 9MPH (I was shooting SW to NE)

The Gauntlet was armed with my HP Baffles and HP Air Stripper with the air bottle filled to crisp 3000psi.


The ammo that I was shooting was straight out of the tin unsorted Walmart special $7.80 Crosman Premier Magnum Domed @ 14.30gr. at 50 yards.


I took 3 sighters and carefully squeezed off 20 shots. The card is a Hajimoto Adaptation of 1" squares on an 8"x11" sheet. The shot analysis was performed using the On Target system.

The string of 23 shots was average 901FPS SD 3.4FPS SPREAD: 12FPS
I don't care how you slice it, this Gauntlet is putting in work! Those targets are only 1" across and that group is at 50 yards!!!

I can not ask the Umarex Gauntlet for anything more............

 
"PumaCarl"Well done! You might want to check out hillairgun.com before you put it aside though. Tim Hill has a new hammer spring guide that is getting his stock .22 Gauntlet 104 good shots. I have one coming and will post how it does on mine in combination with my 22 cubic inch cylinder set at 1300psi.

I am working with Travis Whitney with Jefferson State Air Rifles. I WILL be doing that mod when its available. Thanks for the infos!

I am terrible when it comes to this. I carry a Hatsan Gladius and Hatsan Bullboss around and those two are considered heavy. The Gaunty is definitely noticeably lighter than those.

"Slash91"Thank you for this opinion. Do you find you are getting 60 plus shots per fill with similar power output?
My Gamo Urban only seems to get 20 good shots per fill which is somewhat bothersome. Since it is so light and easy to handle, however, it seems worth it.

SinceI have increased the regulator to 1350-1400 I get 40 to 45 shots before it falls off the regulator. I could easily shot another 10 but they obviously would not be within spec.

Hi Hajimoto,

I want to know if there's any news or updates about the kit/mod that you, Travis, and Jefferson State Air Rifles are working on ?, I want to dive in full with the mods and get the full kit (baffles, striper, the works).
I also want your opinion in this idea of a mod to get more shot count.

With those two working together I could have a 4500PSI max fill pressure and the can be set up to 1800PSI (I can adjust it down later), thing is that the bottle is 60mm wide, so I'll need to dremel or make the inside diameter of the polymer hand guard to fit the tank, will it make too weak? what do you think, will it be worth it or you think that with 0.38L tank that everybody else uses it's enough. Thanks for the reply and for everything else you've done for us Gauntlet owners.

Hey Alejandroo!
I am still waiting on the fabrication to be complete on the valves and other components for the Gauntlet. Last I knew they were in final production to be shipped for Feb. I will update accordingly. As for the tanks for the Gauntlet, In my humble opinion, the larger steel tank is affordable and give a substantial amount of shots in a stock tune. You can expect 105 shots per fill with the valve mod and the stock tank so you should see 160+ with the 0.38L tank. The Carbon Fiber and Reg combo places you in no mans land in that I would not feel comfortable suggesting that you expose the Gauntlet to 1800PSI without some serious modifications. I do not see any DOT certifications on that tank which is concerning. I realize that you said you can reduce it later and I would guess you want to get to 1350-1450 or somewhere thereabouts, that would be cool. You would want to change the burst discs to 1.8K as well as protection should that regulator fail.

The valve in the Gauntlet is held in with only one screw (M5x4) and the bottom stock bolt threads into the locating plug to assist in stopping the valve from coming backward. My concern has always been with the 4 tank block screws M4x10's.



I am not sure what the shear strength of those fasteners is. As for the forearm shroud modifications it really is only cosmetic anyway, just concentrate all rifle support reward of the tank on the rifle's stock.

I am reviewing and commenting only from a mechanical perspective and not talking about the financial considerations of the parts which is another discussion.

Bottom line, get the tank and reg, drop it to 1400, swap burst disc, eliminate the shroud and go to town is a sick shot count!

I don't want to hijack this thread or step on Hajimoto's toes because I really appreciate what he has done with his Gauntlet series of videos but I did say I would post my results. With that in mind I would advise people to go with Haji's and Jefferson State Air Rifle's products just because of all the time they spent on them. I am currently trying to resolve an 8 year problem that I have had with paypal so that I can get Haji's airstripper. Once I have that I will feel that my rifle is done enough; until I decide to open the ports down the road just for fun. Who knows, modding is addicting. Anyway here is what I have to report on my Gauntlet set up with a 22c.i. bottle, regulator set to 1350-1400psi and an aftermarket hammer spring guide kit: 106 shots at 27fpe using JSB 18.13gr pellets. I did not open up any ports or polish any internals. I did set the trigger to 24 ounces single stage and it is really nice. The gun came from the factory set at 19.5 foot pounds, -a seriously bad joke for a .22. I know that I could get more out of it by drilling out some ports but I want to see how a couple of tins of pellets changes things first. I am very happy with the velocities that I am getting (825fps for the JSB's, and 908fps for Crosman 14.3 domed) because the pellets stay stabile and shoot great. And lastly, I am really liking the Strelok app and my FFP scope. I sighted in, in two shots and with the app was hitting everything first shot, very, very cool. From everything that I have been reading, many say that I could actually drop my regulator pressure down if I open my ports up and maintain the same power with a higher shot count. Sounds good, but I am going to wait to see if real numbers and specs pop up before I have to be the guinea pig on that project.
