Rewarding morning.
I managed to roost a few birds last evening so as to have a place to start in the morning. As the sun rose they fired off but would not come my way. As the morning moved towards noon. The wind began to blow a gail.
No way would I be able to make the required shot in the wind. So I packed up my gear and headed to an area out of the wind but now hunting blind. A few lost key key yelps now and then. After a 45 minuet call then wait session. I hear fairly close two gobbles. I can tell by the sound it’s at least two young Jakes. ( last years hatch 1 year olds)
No time to set out decoys. They are to close. I quickly erected my TeePee blind and got ready.
I soft called and raked the leaves to mimic content feeding hen. Without a decoy out. They had to come in close from around the fence row that was obstructing my ability to see them. This put the curious birds just 15 yards in front of me as they presented themselves.
He was bobbing his head as they do looking for his girlfriends. I gave a few quick clucks to get him to pauses.
He does. I take up the slack in the first stage and lean on the second. He moved again. I cluck again. He paused and I fired.
