I recently have noticed a lot more posts on slugs mostly from FX owners getting special twistx liners. I generally understand slugs have a better BC than pellets. Are there slugs available for Veteran, Vulcan, Cricket platforms? So can a regular .25 LW or CZ barrel shoot slugs as accurately as pellets? I don't cruise the forums that consistently so if this has been posted about would appreciate a link.

I have shot NSA 36gr and 39gr through a Taipan Veteran Standard .25 which has the LW and it did pretty good sub 3/4" 10 shot groups at 55yds. Can't remember speeds.

Taipan Veteran long .22 with CZ shot NSA 23gr pretty well in the same sub 3/4" groups at 55yds. Speeds tested were from 870-950fps I believe.

Edgun R5M Long .22 which has an LW barrel designed by Ed and that one shoots by far the best with slugs. Sub 1/2" groups at 55yds is more than doable. 23gr NSA slugs at 865fps. Had it at 900fps but had a few flyers at that speed. Have some 22.5gr and 24gr Varmint Knockers to try in it though still.

I tried some 22.5 grain in my Cricket mini. 711fps and 2" groups at 50 yards. Just too slow for them. It shoots 18 JSB's so well at 880 I am reluctant to up the speed just to try these when I know I will use 18's 99% 0f the time. Maybe when I am bored I will try increasing the speed but not important enough now to fool with it. I was lured into trying them when I heard the smack the South African guys were getting using them in their Impacts. The birds were blowing apart.

I recently posted a 1 1/4 inch 100 yard group using H&N Grizzlies with my Cricket .25. My understanding is that the key to getting the choked barrels to shoot slugs well is finding a slug with the correct diameter.

What velocity were you shooting these at? I shot some 900 feet per second and they were grouping and about an inch at 33 yards from an R5M. The worst of any ammo I've tried. Everything else grouped less than half the size. I'm wondering do they need more velocity to tighten up.

I was pushing these at 875... but from what I've read on shooting slugs from the choked barrels (lothar walther, cz, green mountain) the slugs have to be the right diameter. Based on this they should be about a thousandth larger than the lands in the choke. I think I just got lucky as my cricket pushes the 34 gr jsb at 870 and the grizzlies at 875. This would mean to me the choked is not squeezing the slugs to tight as the velocity is close to the jsb heavies.

Nice group with the Grizzlies!!!

Just goes to show you that you have to experiment with slugs...my power tuned Cricket carbine does not like them at all but shoots the 33 grain skirted varmint knockers like a laser and a bit faster than the JSB heavies on the same power setting! Every barrel is different as we all know and I've also noticed that cleaning the barrel about every 100 rounds really keeps it dialed in....

A stock Cricket will send slugs that are .2500" - 31gr. to 32gr. just fine.

Here's two old - 5 shot groups. The 200 yard group is the best one I've pulled off. But, it shows that under ideal wind conditions a Cricket works.

The 31gr. were Rat Sniper Slugs. The 32gr. are my slugs. Shot all my 31.5 gr. at Ground Squirrels (Long range) this summer. They had the best accuracy, so far testing @ 40 yards. Didn't take photos of their groups apparently.

I've shot many slugs out of OEM factory barrels in pcp airguns. Never a problem.

Here'a MY take on slugs v. heavy pellets....diameter plus velocity = performance!

I don't believe you gain that much, if anything, by spending hundreds of dollars on a "slug liner"....when the standard pcp quality barrel shoots them just fine, IF you get the correct diameter and weight to match the output power of your gun! Don't shoot too large, or too heavy a slug in a moderate performance pcp gun. You won't be happy with the results. If your pcp isn't equal to 50 fpe with pellets, I wouldn't waste your money on slugs.

If, however, you have an Edgun long, or a Taipan Long, or one of the other brands with equal performance, then choose your slug weights and diameters carefully. They will shoot fine, but not all guns like the same slug! Start with the lighter, smaller diameter slugs...work your way up to whatever best suits the gun you own! Accuracy/results will tell you when to stop.

It's trial and error with slugs...and how much money you have to spend on bells and whistles!

Not everyone will agree here...your mileage may vary. It's just my experience since 1970 when I spoke with Dr. Beeman's wife on the phone, and she sold me an HW 55 Springer.

Thanks Guys.

So if I get the .25 veteran long I'm thinking about getting what I hear is I just need to try different types until I find something that works. Ideally I'd be able to shoot equally accurately between slugs and pellets and easily switch between the two just by setting the adjustment in the back to known spots. But something tells me that I'll also need to adjust scope etc...

If someone has shot slugs though a .25 veteran long I'd love to hear about the results.
