Red Dot/Reflex Sights?

WOW! I swapped out a scope for a cheap reflex red dot sight and I’m really liking how quickly and accurately I can shoot with it. Sure, I won’t be winning any RMAC or EBR competitions shooting like this but for plinking fun in the backyard, it turns me into a quick draw sniper! Ha ha ha!

Finding the target quickly and shooting it IS very easy with this sight setup. I could see this being a great way to go pesting in a close range situation at 25 yards or less or inside a building. I’m hitting tin cans just past 50 yards and 1” spinners close up at 15 yards with very few misses. At 50 yards I put the dot just under the can.

I wanted to share this with you to encourage others to try it out. Shooting like this is the BOMB! 💣 Also, it makes the shooting package lighter (compared with scope) and more maneuverable.

the red dots have an advantage where the dot is, is what your aimed at

and your head, eye, could off it's center and of course the reflex give you a wider field of view, something I find the reds don't

are they pin point no but they are sure good enough in most cases and when it comes to fun, most cases work very well

sometimes a think after read threads day after day that the fun has been squeezed out of air gunning trying for that one hole 5 shot group but again I'm just an old man

I have a few sight that look just like that one and for about 20 bucks everyone should have one or two

as long as one keeps in mind that red dots are NOT designed, or intended, for long range PRECISE shooting.

i use a red/green dot on an Airforce Talondor with good results within 60 yards but it is not as accurate as using a telescopic device.

in actuality, IMO, red/green dots are very much like open sights but without having to align front and rear sights.

each has it's advantage/disadvantage.

I had this sight on one of my P17s. It was great on that too but I was shooting at much closer ranges being it’s such a low powered pistol. I had watched a video on YT of these guys hunting iguana in the Cayman Islands. They were using red dots on their rifles. As I watched it I didn’t really think much of it. Now that I have tried it on my rifle/bullpup, I think it’s a great idea. Ha ha!

It seems to have made me a more accurate offhand shooter too! What’s not to like about that? It’s easier to keep steady since I’m not over compensating like I might when looking through a scope with magnification. It really does make it point and shoot. I keep the dot in the center of the lens. Being the Wildcat is a multi shot, side lever pcp, it’s easy to keep my cheekweld and not have to find the dot again each time I take a shot.

I’m like you Michael, I think everyone should have a couple of these less expensive reflex sights to try out.

Fantastic looking rig grackleblast!

Does anyone know if these reflex sights will hold up to springer recoil? I'm thinking about trying one out on a 13 fpe HW95 or 77K. I'm not out a whole lot of $$$ if it doesn't. I'll report back if/when I try it.

So I set up a woods walking range in my yard. I set out 10 targets at various ranges and walked the course shooting as I went, pretending to be stalking small game targets. I will say the reflex sight is PERFECT for shooting like this. Ranges were approximately 10 yards out to 35 maybe 40. It was a great exercise. All shooting was done standing offhand or some sort of kneeling/squatting position.

If it is just a typical walmart esque red dot it will probably not. Id say it would make it a week or so of shooting. I may be wrong however. But the holosun i suggested will handle it :) also if you take your red dot and twist it to the side yoh may notice that the dot will speed up to the edge the farther out you go. And becomes innacurate unless you are lined up exactly. One of the factors i had considered when i purchased my red dot.

Hope this helps but theyre SOOO fun !!!

Very timely as I have been thinking about this same thing here lately.

What kind of accuracy are you getting inside of 30 yards? (Group size?)

Would a Springer destroy one of these? I’d be tempted to give it a try. I have one at home sitting around doing nothing.

*Typical of me, read right past the same question above. I look forward to your results 😃

Thanks for the link! I’m going to go check it out.

I absolutely love that shorty Crown! That looks like a very handy and cool shooter. What are you shooting out of it and what power are you tuned at? It’s one tough looking rifle, that’s for sure.

I have one on my .22 and one on my .30 rainstorm set on a 45 degree mount. Have the red dot set for 45 yards and use the scope for longer range. I really like that combination.

That’s a fantastic idea! I never would have thought of that one myself. You get the best of both worlds wrapped up in one complete package like that. Well done sir!

I put an inexpensive TruGlow on an old El Gamo 68. It’s fairly low powered (500 fps in .22), but really effective across the yard. Tightened-up groups on paper too.

Likely not as forgiving of rough handling as a good scope or stock irons, but a fun option to have. Wouldn’t want one on every gun I’ve got.

That’s a cool looking rig there Skillet! I’m sure light duty recoil shouldn’t tear one up but what do I know? I may give it a shot and see. Maybe I should order a backup sight just in case? Yeah!

I set it up last week just getting around to shooting and tuning it the only pellets i have are crossmans for breakin purposes and jsb 18.1grn my plan is to have the shorty crown for the 70- range so im going to aim for around 780 -840 fps for higher shot count. Im going to sight it in and tune it today. Will update.

However i will be trying the monster jsbs and see what happens.

And yall have got some seriously cool rifle setups. :)

I work all the time at the moment. I can afford my hobby but not much time to dedicate sadly lol. Just the normal conundrum :)

Hey Christian!

I had a few moments before heading into work today so I set up a target at 30 yards and rested the WC with the reflex on it. I got it sighted in @ 30 using AA 8.4 pellets. Then I started to take 4 shots at each target. The last target (bottom right) I stepped forward 5 paces (25 yards to target) and I squatted down and shot 8 shots (full magazine) into it just to see how well I could shoot for real world results. I think the pictures will tell the story.

Overall, the red dot proves to be very precise for what it is. A scope is much more precise but the RD is very effective also.

The dot covers the targets that I drew on the cardboard at 30 yards. It was tough to see the drawing at that distance it good light but it still works great.
