RAW Offset Moderator

I am finally having my buddy Neil make a replacement moderator for our RAW. We’re meeting up today so he can take the gun and work on it for a few days. He wanted it disassembled and I cannot get the rear section of the moderator off of the barrel. I have tried heating it up and can’t get it to budge. Is there any way to get it off of the barrel without a press?

Thanks, Stoti

The only way is a press Sir...

Once the rear section is pressed off, she's can pretty easily slide back on if you want...

I have Neal's newest c/f moderator on the 60 fpe raw .25 and she is very effective. Raw .25 cal is as quiet as my .177 Theoben Rapid MKII @ 20 fpe...

Thanks. I remember this post from way back when and looked it up the other day too. I was hoping to find a way to get the rear end cap off of the barrel without having a big press. After creating this post this morning, I did get it off. I removed the small set screw, heated it up nice and hot and it slid right off, very easily. After I had been struggling with it all morning, I didn’t think it was going to come off without a press. I was pretty amazed at how easily it cam off. Maybe removing the set screw completely and heating up the adhesive for the 10th time is just what it took.

I met with Neil this morning, he gave me a small moderator he made for my son’s Zbroia and then I gave him our RAW to work his magic. He’s going to make 2 or 3 different designs to see what works best but he wants to make a long, thin moderator to match the shroud’s diameter pretty closely that mounts partially up the moderator to decrease overall length. He’s going to test a few before finally deciding on the best version. I’m going to create a post talking about that moderator specifically because I have talked to at least 3-4 people who want to replace the offset moderator on their RAW. After Neil is done with mine, he’ll be dialed in and know exactly how to make the best version to replace the offset design on the RAW. People will be able to contact him and have a moderator made without sending in their gun or taking a bunch of measurements.

Should just be a couple of days. If it works well the way we talked about it being made, it will be really cool looking and the overall length will be shorter than a stock RAW. The only hang up was that someone else was talking to Neil about having a moderator being made. He told Neil, by mistake, that the barrel was threaded so Neil was a little confused. Once we cleared that up, we came up with a plan. He’s got my RAW so he can try a few different designs and get it dialed in. He was hoping to have a couple prototypes made in a few days at which time I’m going to take him some .25 cal pellets and test them out. Talking with him this morning got my son and I excited. Should be cool looking and I know it will be quiet.

Here’s a picture of a 6”x 1.25” moderator he made the other day for my son’s Zbroia. Small, light and super quiet!

Neil Clague is the man. Every moderator he’s ever made me has been super effective. The one we just picked up for my son’s gun is only 6” long and 1.25” wide and is quieter than the Sumo. The one he’s making for our RAW is going to be long, maybe 8-9-10-12 inches but will slip over the barrel, butt up just shy of the bottle and mount about a third of the way up the moderator so it will be shorter overall than the original and I know it will be a lot quieter, so I’m happy!

My .25 RAW just returned from Martin after being serviced and having original 2 chamber eccentric moderator removed and more conventional 3 chamber concentric moderator installed. I have fired it a few times but no time yet to test for accuracy or sound level. I was told it would be an improvement so I guess I’ll find out. While long it is not as long as I expected. Muzzle to end of CF tube is about 14 inches with outer diameter of 1.25”and inner about 1.125”. It has 3 chambers and no filler (felt).

I may make a new endcap with a 1/2” x 20 nipple for a supplemental moderator if I find gun too loud. I have little experience with airgun moderator design but do wonder about unfavorably disturbing air around pellet. If I were starting from scratch I’d try to get as much air as possible into 1st (larger) chamber and maybe use open cell foam to slow air velocity in that chamber. The forward part of last chamber at the muzzle I’d want more of a stripper device.
