Been crushing numbers: Steyr H5A shot count

Hi all!

Got my new gun scoped up and ready to go today. Unfortunately the weather here has not been on my side; winds at 15 m/s and the occasional snow shower.

So I took my newly acquired rifle to the basement to do some work over the chrono. From a 200 bar fill down to 100, I got 90 very consistent shots averaging at 857 fps with the JSB 10,34 gr pellets! I had some concerns about the regulator would have trouble keeping up when shooting rapid fire, but the gun were just as consistent as while I took my time and waited a couple of seconds between the shots. Call me impressed!

I'll update with some groups as soon as the weather calms down. :)

"AJ"You must NOT be from the USA openly discussing such device.
Nice gun BTW.

Silencers on air rifles are legal in the USA. Silencers on firearms require a license which costs $200.00 anually but they are legal as well. If our congress critters get off their lazy scardy arses and pass the hearing protection act even that restriction goes away. Sadly there is one US based forum which misguidedly flogs its users for mentioning that word. This is not that one, may it ever be thus.

"Goodtogo"Its hard to deal with the Gov but they are trying to change the rules for hearing protection. Here is what the Alphabet org says.

https://www.Alphabet org.gov/firearms/qa/are-paintball-andor-airgun-sound-suppressers-nfa-firearms
Yeap... and you still see thousands of folks using them every day with no prosecutions... maybe that is only half the story... That statement is "wiggle room" and not the actual law, which I link below. Lets have a look at what you can buy in the big box stores?

or at AOA:

or Pyramid Air:
http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Gamo_Swarm_Maxxim_Multi_shot_Air_Rifle/4310
http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/AirForce_Condor_SS_PCP_Air_Rifle_Spin_Loc_Tank/3063

Here is the law:
https://www.Alphabet org.gov/firearms/firearms-guides-importation-verification-firearms-gun-control-act-definition-silencer

A correct interpretation of that law (definition) is the reason that air gun silencers are legal ... That definition specifies INTENT of use on a FIREARM It is exactly that lack of INTENT which has allowed Alphabet org to ignore the offerings linked above, and make NO mistake about it, they are indeed aware of those offerings and they are indeed demonstrating more common sense in regard to those offerings than some of the folks in our own community.  As a matter of fact, some folks in this community seem to be more interested in seeing the progress we have made with Alphabet org reversed WRT to the "device which shall not be named". I guess they didn't see Harry Potter ;) Such people are not working with us because they don't want to be part of the more general "shooting" community. They are only interested in their little niche and preserving only that niche. The problem with that idea is that you don't protect your house by barricading yourself in the bedroom and shouting, "Don't come in here!" You protect your property at the property line. For the purposes of this discussion that line is the "shooting sports".

That said; here is the precedent which supports the contention that intent matters. In short this man was simultaneously convicted of felony possession of explosives or precursors and convicted of a silencer violation because he had an air rifle suppressor. In a subsequent appeal he was acquitted of the silencer conviction because they could not prove the intent to use it as a firearms suppressor:

And then we have the God Father's Take on it (from three years ago):
An update on airgun silencers[/QUOTE]http://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2014/11/an-update-on-airgun-silencers/embed/

Your mileage may vary.

@ navnasen

I found my Steyr H5 has a very consistent extreme spread when I take my time between shots. But when I speed things up (rapid semi-auto)... that extreme spread increases quite a bit. If i recall correctly the velocity decreases by 40-50 fps over 3 magazines (15 shots). My assumption was that the regulator didn't have enough time to recharge?

I just received a new chrony so I'll be checking that again.

Regardless, I still find it one of the most satisfying guns to shoot. It always puts a smile on my face.

Enjoy

No I'm not. Silencer are not regulated in any way here in Norway, both for firearms and airguns.

I bought mine from https://www.krale-schietsport.nl/en/

Michael
I had some concerns about that, but it's not a problem with mine.

Getting numbers like this when I wait a couple of seconds between the shots:
JSB 8,44gr: 942, 942, 944, 943, 946
JSB 10,34gr: 860, 853, 848, 848, 861
JSB 13,43gr: 741, 738, 740, 741, 738

Shooting as fast as I can, I get these numbers:
JSB 10,34gr: 855, 861, 863, 850, 861

The extreme spread were 22 fps over 90 shots from 200BAR down to 100BAR.

Fresh snow on the ground here this morning, but at least the wind has stopped howling. Can't wait to take it outside and shoot some groups later today!

Beautiful rifle! I also use a Atec wave carbon on my steyr (LG110), they work excellent! Bigger silencers/moderators/LDCs don't get it much quieter than these.

It is the standard length tube right? Than 90 shots is a nice shot count! The regs of steyrs don't need much time to get the regulated chamber back up to pressure, a few seconds is more than enough. On my LG110 (in .22) even about a second is enough to get it back to pressure to keep the extreme spread within 10fps (I weighed out the extreme outliers in weight for this).

The problem with these topics is that it reminds me of also wanting one :p Have you already tried to shot clay pigeons like Carl (the owner of Steyr Sport) himself did in one of the promotional videos? :p That seems like a fun thing to do with these semi-auto rifles :)

Thanks! Originally I wanted the Hugget Belita, but then I found this A-Tec at my local dealer at a great price. Does a really good job quieting things down so I won't be buying the Belita.

Yes, the Scout version has the standard length tube. I'm VERY happy with the shot count.

Have not tried clay pigeon shooting yet, but I have seen the videoclip many times! The scope is a true 1-8x FFP scope with illumination - might just work for that kind of shooting! :-D

The stock seemed to be a little dry when I got it, so I have been giving it som attention and Scherell's Schaftol. About 10 layers. Turned out great IMHO, much better than the pictures show!

As for the accuracy, here is 3x5 shot groups at 35 meters with JSB 13.43gr:

Same pellets at 62 meter:

A little more magnification on the scope (I have a 1-8x scope on it) could help tighten up the group a little, but the wind is my biggest enemy at this range.

Very calm conditions here today, will test the 13.4gr JSBs at 800 fps and report my findings later today. :)

That's a rifle I always wanted!

But it stuck in my mind that it only had 5 shots so I never took the plunge, I know it's fine for hunting but I just wanted more shots avaliable. I wonder why no 10 shot conversions ever came out from Steyr or aftermarket??????

I have a LP5 and a LGB1 so I'm well acquainted with Steyr, the 5 shot mags, and the great products they are.

It really disappointed me that the ProX stopped being imported to the US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
