Are you waiting for a slug liner for your .30 Crown....Don't hold your breath!

This is the answer I got from Utah when asked when the 30 slug barrels would be available for te Crown:

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for reaching out. So that probably isn’t going to be an option for the Crown unfortunately, at least in the near future. FX hasn’t announced that they will be doing any .30 slug liners yet for its current guns. The primary issue is going to be power, slugs need to be moving pretty fast to have any accuracy and a longer barrel to stabilize.

Not saying that it will happen, we just don’t have any info for the near future. Let us know of any other questions!

Thanks,

Mike

I don't recall FX ever saying there would be slug liners in 30 caliber.

If they made an announcement like that, I could have easily not taken note of it due to I was only concerned about 22 caliber.

No they didn´t

Here is the thing: I wouldn't expect FX to make a slug barrel in .30 because doing so wouldn't make much sense.

As it stands, FX's guns are at their limits pushing the super light .30s we have already. How do I mean? Well the velocities on the .30s with pellets are on the low end, and while with tuning I'm sure you can go higher, take a moment and actually look at what the JSB .30s look like:

That is a pretty squat and short pellet, not exactly long and optimized for BC even by pellet standards. Just a quick visual comparison and it looks most similar in proportions to the .22 Express:
https://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/JSB_Diablo_Exact_Jumbo_Express_22_Cal_14_3_Grains_Domed_250ct/585

Technically a deeper length-diameter-mass analysis could be done here, but I think it largely illustrates the point how the .30 pellets are toward the light end of the design spectrum and are a long ways away form things like this:

The point I'm trying to illustrate here is that, by the time you're in .30 caliber, these guns are already struggling to sling what are essentially a light weight pellet design.

So now you move over to slugs, which have more barrel drag, require energy-sapping faster twist rates, are intended to be longer and heavier for optimized ballistic coefficients, and like to be shot at higher velocities than pellets. Even with tuning and the lightest weight Neilsen slugs, you're just going to be behind the curve in terms of power. And just look at those things, they're comically stubby.

I would guess, and it is just a guess, but I would guess that in order to get the higher sectional densities you want to beat out the smaller calibers you'll need a considerably heavier slug. Thus you'll probably be better off going to a smaller bore diameter if you want to shoot slugs, irrespective of what is actually available. Or, alternately, jump up to a more powerful airgun.

Just my 2c.
