12ftlb or HO

Hey guys I am ordering Vortek parts kits for one of my R9 riflrsvin .177. How much difference in shooting experience will get between the two. I like the flat shooting 17 but I am afraid the HO may push standard weight pellets too fast and I will lose accuracy. Am I thinking correctly here ?

hdrk1111 I can't speak to the R9, however I had a great HO Air Arms Prosport and changed to a lower f/lb vortex kit and the accuracy improved using 8.44 JSB's. Don't get me wrong, it was very accurate on HO (18 f/lbs) but more so at 14flb. .50" ten shot groups at 20 yards went to 3/8" and 1/4". It may all have been due to the difference in gun motion or a combination of factors, I don't know that answer. It was substantially easier to cock.
Will be interesting to see what your results will be. Keep us posted.

IMHO, there is a trade off between power and accuracy above 12fpe or so.

I get better accuracy and more enjoyable shooting from my springers at 12fpe. That is also plenty of power for hunting small game out to 40 yards.

I am leaning towards the 12ftlb kit. I figure if the small game it out too far , i always have the rimfire to hunt them with.

Hdrk1111, my FWB 124d shoots jsb 8.4 @ 860 for about 13.88 fpe. Zeroed @ 40 yds have taken starlings @ 75 yds. You will love the flat trajectory. Go for it.

I too recommend a 12 ft lb kit for accuracy and ease of shooting. My Walter LGV and Beeman R7 are OEM 12 ft lb or less and a RWS 34P that I installed a 12 ft lb Vortek kit in. I believe that I have made the best power level decision. Good luck.

Another vote for 12ft lb or there abouts in .177. I have 2 detuned HW95s and they are easier to shoot accurately and easier to cock. A 8 gr pellet in the 800-850 fps range is “perfect” in these rifles in my experience.

12 FT LBS is usually a bit more accurate and if you are going for game, you can place a shot closer to the kill zones.

You can always add a washer or two to up the anti a little if you would like. My TX200 started out a little less than 12 FT LBS and by adding two washers I got it up to about 13 which works perfectly for me.

I've reduced the power on my .177 Pro Sport and now my LGU.Trust me,You will never miss the few extra ft. lbs. In addition,the firing behavior, accuracy and enjoyment factor will put You on cloud nine!

Ok, so I installed the Vortek parts kit. I removed any sharp edges and ploished the piston . Lubed it all up and put it back together as a 12ftlb. I think I rushed the cleaning of the air cylinder as I had a little bit of old residual grease come out of the transfer port. Cleaned the port and the bore several times. I put about 200 pellets through it . I did not have access to a chrony, but it did shoot considerably smoother and a lot more quiet than prior to installing the kit. Accuracy after the break in has been great with both JSB exact 8.44 and H&N FT 8.66 grain pellets shooting right at 1/2” 10 shot groups from 20yards. The groups were shot using my range bag as a rest. I will post again when I see what she is doing across a chrony. Thanks to of you who shared your experience in a effort to help me make a sound choice. It is all greatly appreciated.
