Help Me .177 or .22

I have both, a 54 Diana in 22 and the 34 in 177. Both plenty accurate for 30 to 35 yard hunting needs. BUT, will the 177, with the 8.4 grain Diablos it prefers be enough for rabbit and squirrel. What if the ole raccoon or possum are targeted occasionally?

Please, no thinkers, just those that have had hands on experience with both. at 70 years and an avid hunter, I know placement is everything, and have spent decades doing this with rimfire handguns, but the eyes aint what they once were, and I am dang sure not as steady as I once was!

Whichever you're more comfortable with. I've taken plenty of raccoons and groundhogs with both calibers. The benefit of the .177 is that you have a bit more room for error in your ranging. 22 cal gives you more room for error in your wind reading and general POI.

For 30-35 yards where ranging isn't as difficult, I'd probably pick a nice 17fpe .22 cal and call it a day. I can tell you from experience that you absolutely want to point blank a groundhog and raccoon in the back of the head with a pellet before handling it though. Those buggers aren't always as dead as they seem to be

so I have had similar guns..rws Diana 48 in 22 and the rws Diana 34 in 177.. both are fine for squirrels but personally I think 22 is better even at 50 yards because of the wind resistant to blowing off track..
you had several people who are right on in the recommendations.
I've never shot rabbit..I don't think it would be a problem with either as long as small.. but we have big Jack rabbits and I don't think I would try anything less than 22 on them.. I doubt you would have trouble with the possum.. but the biggest problem is you put in raccoon.. those are really tough animals and I don't know, unless I only had my PCP 22 I don't think I'd personally try it even with that.. unless I had no choice.. I don't even like to have to shoot them with 22 lr..
I'm sure there's others that have experience with coons but my experience with them is I wish I never had to deal with them.. I've had to shoot too many..but I won't tolerate them coming to get my dog especially since I don't have anything for them to eat or any reason for them to come after my dog..although several had a excuse of rabies..broad daylight attack..they are tough and mean..
hopefully this helps you a little bit to decide..
