Altaros slugs for 100 and beyond

I buy direct in bulk. 5000 rounds plus shipping came out to around 0.18 cents per round.
Aww, yes, thank you, I have been looking everywhere to try to find out what these things are running when purchased in bulk.

How do you go about getting a bulk purchase going with them? Just send an email/call and let them know what you want?

When you were deciding how many to buy, any chance you did any shopping around on what they came out to at various quantites, say such as if you were to buy 10,000 or 20,000? Just wondering. I don't have pockets that deep, but might be good info for a club who could get several buyers together for one big bulk purchase, if the savings justified a bigger order.

Thanks!

@Franklink

AVS and Griffin and etc? aren't making anything (to my knowledge) with BCs as high as the Altaros.

So my comment that I've got some Altaros on hand, but I've been dragging my feet b/c they might be really good from my gun and then I'd want to buy more all relates back to the fact that they're simply offering something that no one else is, and the price matches that fact. I don't see any problem with them charging what they are. They're offering something that no one else is, so of course a a premium. It's just tough to get on board with paying that, when it's more than 3x what I'm accustomed to paying for airgun ammo.

I'm usually about 0.05BC from the .22/25.4, and 0.048 from the .20/15.89 and 0.09 from the .20/15.89. So, just like price, it's all relative. The small bore NSA slugs are nearly double the BC of the pellets I'm typically shooting (and even about 30% better than the .25/34gr pellets you cite), and that can sure be noticed at 100 yards. I imagine the even further jump in BC to what the Altaros slugs are doing is phenomenal to experience, assuming a guys barrel/gun likes em.

Totally agree. I think the same when I go to a match and shoot two rounds of N50 (about 200 rounds or $40) or shoot an NRL-22 match and burn 100 rounds ($20). An EFT match isn’t that bad as far as number of slugs, but I’ve been concentrating on pellets since all the big matches are pellets only.

That BC for the .20 caliber slugs is extremely good compared to other similarly sized slugs like the .22 Howlers which spec out at 0.074 G1. I had been shooting the 41 grain ZANs which do around 0.12 RA4 prior to shifting to the Altaros. Accurate and very good “conventional” performance. And 1/2 the price of the Altaros. But the Altaros in the Panthera 600mm Superior Heavy are just amazing. Obviously the shooter figures in there, look at Peykan setting the course record at UFT with standard Patriot 34 grain slugs.
What does AVS stand for? Wondering if its a slug I haven't looked into and would be worth doing so if the cost vs performance is good vs other brands? I'm not looking for the creem of the crop, but would like to look into any slugs that are 'hitting' above what their price point would have you thinking they should, aka good price vs value.

Thanks!

EDIT: Put on my thinking cap and realized I might find it if i just googled AVS and added slugs behind it, lol, and sure enough, "Air Velocity Sport" aka AVS was the first result that popped up!

No one ever accuses me of being a smart man... wonder why? lol.

I cant remember what I was shooting, it's been over a year. Utah airguns recommended using a lighter moderator than the donnyfl emperor I'm using. I do have alot of slugs for it with weights ranging from 25 - 40 grains. I bought it to shoot heavy slugs, 34 - 40 grains, or heavier if they make them. I was also thinking of doing a caliber change to .25 caliber to shoot the altaros 60 - 66 grain slugs. Also of all the calibers you have for that m3 800mm barrel set up what one do you find the most accurate shooting slugs at 50 - 100 yards? Any information you can give me is really appreciated.
I personally think the Altaros would be a waste for anything less than 100 yards unless it was for competition in the wind and only then would you see any difference.

I guess I'm just so accustomed to 3-6cents, shipped (and that's for "the good stuff" like JSB or NSA), that I struggle with even 18 cents.
Mind sharing where/how you are getting JSB and NSA slugs for $0.03 - $0.06 shipped?

Most of what I have priced out on NSA has been more like $0.07 - $0.09 per slug shipped. Think the cheapest I came across was NSA directly and was still a bit over $0.06 per slug and required over a $1,000 purchase to get at that price with their tiered % discount they offer. that being said, I read some place they will sell in bulk if you call them, vs buying 60 or whatever of their normal sized boxes off thier website. Haven't personally looked into this. Anyone able to verify they actually offer bulk sales? And if so, anyone able to quote what the breakdown was per slug on such sales?

Thanks!

Quoting myself here, but this is comment #36 from earlier in this discussion.... (See also post #38-it usually pays off to read comments made in discussions)

The 3-6cents was based on what I shoot the most of for long range airguns, high BC pellets and high (for fpe) BC slugs.

.20/15.89 JSB
.22/25.4 JSB
.20/18.9 NSA

But I'm also pretty happy with airguns. If I wanted to shoot rimfire fpe levels, I would.

Altaros slugs are mighty expensive airgun ammo.

And yeah, gonna pay something like $10-12 for shipping from NSA but since this was about price of shooting Altaros versus other typical airgun ammo and altaros took the shipping out of their price breakdown...

I'm not an Altaros hater. On the contrary I'm quite impressed by them as an innovative company. I have an Altaros booster pump and have been quite happy with it. Their slugs offer such an advantage over other slugs that I've argued that they should be considered a third type of airgun ammo if comparing them to what we've been calling slugs for the last 8ish years. My point is only that you're going to pay for that BC and it's gonna hurt when you're used to paying 1/3 or 1/4 or 1/5 the price per airgun trigger pull.

Yep just send an email. They have info on their product pages for bulk orders.

Based on my last purchase, the savings tops out around 2000-2500 rounds, which is the weight limit they can package and ship in one box. At that point you're getting the bulk discount and maximizing your shipping cost.

I appreciate the information and refering me back to where it was covered! I am a VERY slow reader, so started to skim things as best I could for times sake, but obviously had missed the very key information that I was specifically looking for. I appreciate you taking time to get me on track with where to find the info, and not being rude about it as some likely would be.

Thank you!

The NSA .20/18.9 slugs are pellet cheap.

300 for $16.99. Spend enough to get the free shipping ($150) and/or enough to use the 10% off ($300) and they get even cheaper.

The small caliber offerings from NSA are, again, pellet cheap. Just a matter of finding the magic barrel/slug combo.

And no, the BC of any of the NSA small-bore stuff iisn't even close to what the Altaros slugs are achieving, but BCs from small bore NSA slugs can be high enough to make pellets feel like a joke.
So I noticed a discrepency (kind of) in two different places on NSA. On their landing page or up top it says:
  • Ammo Orders over $150 get 7% off*
  • Ammo Orders over $300 get 12% off*
  • Ammo Orders over $1000 get 18% off*
Despite this, as you quoted, in the cart is says that it is giving you 10% off and not the 12% stated elsewhere. At first I was a little upset by this, but, after doing the math, it is in fact giving you 12% and not just the 10% as stated in the cart. Guessing a clerical error in someone's typing.

*Please excuse the bold typing... after I copied and pasted the middle section from the NSA website on their tiered discount percentages, I couldn't figure out how to change the font size back to that of my original paragraph, lol.
