i have seen a single coyote get a domestic dog to chase him into the woods, where the rest of the coyotes buddies would then attack in mass, so I do think they hunt in packs. ive also had friends hunting in ground blinds charged by a group of 3 to 4 while in their stand....

coyotes are very crafty, if you want to draw them to a specific area (ie bait pile) it needs to be close to cover so they feel safe. also dont shoot one if there is a bunch of them, it will just educate the rest that arent shot. wait until just one or two come, not several. 

you've opened my eyes to something, after your post re possums eating ticsks read up on them. now i no longer shoot them, but use a hav a heart trap, once trapped i then transport them to my favorite hunting permission, release them so they can help prevent me from getting bitten by a lyme...
